Mandapa occupies a private valley surrounding the Ayung River in Ubud — not a resort that happens to be near a river, but a property constructed around the river's presence, with every building oriented toward the water and every experience calibrated to the jungle's soundscape. Kunal and Tara, who had been living in New York for five years, chose it because they wanted a wedding that felt like a complete removal from their ordinary environment. Mandapa achieves this more completely than any other property in Asia.
The 50-guest ceremony on the riverside pavilion was the most genuinely intimate Hindu ceremony our team has produced in Bali. With a Balinese Hindu blessing conducted at the property's temple each morning, and an Indian Hindu ceremony on the pavilion above the river, the spiritual geography of the location felt precisely aligned with the ritual. The pandit — who had worked with us on three Bali weddings — said afterward that he had never felt the ceremony's mantras carried so resonantly.
The design used the jungle as its primary material. No draping, no uplighting, no constructed backdrop. The ceremony mandap was a single structure of bamboo and hand-woven palm, decorated with white frangipani and wild orchid in the Balinese offering style. The Ayung River below provided the ceremonial sound bed. The surrounding rice paddies provided the horizons.
At the reception dinner on the river terrace, as the candlelight reflected off the moving water below and the jungle sounds rose around the 50 guests, Tara leaned to Kunal and said — loudly enough for the Panigrahana team to hear — 'If we could live here, we would.' It is the most absolute endorsement we have received from a couple.
