A ceremony on the ocean-facing rampart of a UNESCO-listed 17th-century Dutch fort, a reception in the inner courtyard, a rehearsal dinner inside the fortifications — a wedding that moved through four centuries of history in a single day.

The Fortress Galle occupies a contemporary luxury resort built within the ramparts of the UNESCO-listed Dutch Fort of Galle — a structure begun in 1588 and completed in 1663, one of the best-preserved colonial fortifications in Asia. Prakash and Sowmya chose it because they wanted their wedding to have genuine historical weight, not the manufactured heritage of a new-build resort attempting a colonial aesthetic.

The ceremony was held on the Fort's ocean-facing rampart wall — a 15-metre-wide walkway at the top of the fortification, with the Indian Ocean directly below and the Galle Fort lighthouse visible to the north. Ninety chairs were arranged along the rampart; the mandap was positioned at the seaward edge, framing the couple against the horizon. The ocean breeze, at this height, was constant and significant.

The reception in the resort's inner courtyard — enclosed by the 400-year-old fort walls on all four sides — was transformed with warm lantern lighting and a floral installation that used the courtyard's natural proportions as structural elements. The dinner moved through three courses while the guests sat inside an architectural enclosure that had sheltered people through the fall of three empires.

The rehearsal dinner, held the night before in one of the Fort's restored storage chambers — now a private dining room within the fortification walls — produced the most atmospheric moment of the three days: 20 people at a long table, candlelit, inside a 360-year-old stone room with the sound of the ocean through the apertures in the wall. History, hospitality, and love, compressed into a single evening.
