South Indian bridal jewellery: temple, polki, mangalsutras and lab-grown diamonds

Choose a style for each function first: temple or antique gold, kundan or polki, diamonds or lab-grown diamonds. On gold, ask for the BIS hallmark and check the HUID in the BIS Care app. On diamonds, read the certificate. Lab-grown diamonds cost a flat ₹35,000 a carat at Reia Diamonds, before setting and gold.

Temple, kundan or polki: what the words mean

Start with three words you will hear at the counter. Temple jewellery is heavy gold carved with deities such as Lakshmi, Ganesha and Krishna; it was once made for temple idols and now comes as layered necklaces, armbands, waist belts and earrings. Kundan sets polished stones in gold foil and weighs less than solid gold. Polki uses uncut, unpolished diamonds, usually set in gold over a lac base, and has a matte sheen.

In Bangalore you will find them side by side. Abaran's Bridal & Heritage range has antique mango harams, armlets and rose-cut diamond necklaces. Regal Jewellers puts temple, diamond, kundan and gemstone pieces into one bridal collection, Navavadhu, and sells polki bridal sets with certified diamonds. Kandalaa House of Jewellery in Jayanagar lists chokers, long necklaces (hara) and waist belts (oddiyanam) among its categories.

Two regional pieces are worth knowing by name. The elakkathali is a traditional Kerala gold ornament, and Regal Jewellers has a collection built on it. Kasulaperu is a necklace of coins; Pinterest searches in India for "Kasulaperu designs gold" rose 275 per cent between December and February, against a year earlier. Kushals sells kasulaperu-style necklaces in copper alloy from ₹1,800, a cheaper way to wear the look at a smaller function.

The mangalsutra, old and new

Lab-grown diamonds have reached the mangalsutra too. Aukera's lab-grown designs start at ₹64,682 for the Halo of Vows: round brilliant stones of EF colour and VVS clarity in 18KT yellow gold. House of Quadri and Nivara Diamonds each sell their own lab-grown versions.

If the mangalsutra or thaali in your family is an heirloom, you may want it reworked rather than replaced. PMJ Jewels restrings and redesigns old pieces through patwa, the craft of stringing beads such as emeralds, rubies and pearls, and its site gives a mangalsutram passed down as an example.

Lab-grown or mined diamonds

A lab-grown diamond is carbon crystallised in a laboratory, by CVD or HPHT, with the same hardness and optical properties as a mined stone. Reia Diamonds, a lab-grown specialist, says a gemologist needs specialist equipment to tell the two apart. Its own explainer also says a mined diamond still has the edge if rarity and open-market resale matter most to you.

Source: Reia Diamonds, Jayanagar flagship and lab-grown diamond explainer · checked 15 Oct 2026

Reia's explainer puts lab-grown stones at 70 to 90 per cent below mined ones of comparable size and quality. Rates also differ between shops: Reia charges a flat ₹35,000 a carat, and Nivara Diamonds ₹50,000 a carat for IGI-certified stones of E colour and VVS clarity; the setting and the gold are added on top at both. Compare the grade printed on each certificate as well as the rate.

For a custom ring, Reia, Nivara and House of Quadri all have you approve a design before anything is made. Reia shows you a render and usually delivers custom pieces in 7 to 14 days. Nivara works from a CAD drawing and a wax sample and quotes three to four weeks. House of Quadri builds a 3D rendering for your approval first.

Ask how the jeweller buys a piece back. Aukera's written policy pays the full value of the metal plus 80 per cent of the current diamond rate on smaller invoices and 70 per cent on larger ones, after making charges and GST, and excludes customised pieces. Reia lets you put up to 70 per cent of a diamond's value towards an upgrade.

Buying gold: hallmark, making charges and buy-back

Ask for a BIS hallmark on every gold piece. A hallmarked piece carries an HUID number; enter it in the BIS Care app under Verify HUID to see the jeweller's registration. If you doubt a piece later, a BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centre will test it for a fee, and if hallmarked gold falls short of its marked purity, BIS rules set compensation at twice the shortfall plus the testing charges.

The metal rate is much the same from shop to shop. The making charge, the wastage and the buy-back terms are not, and on a heavy bridal set the gap is worth two or three quotes on the same design. Regal Jewellers prints its making charge on the tag and on your estimate under what it calls a Wholesale Rate Policy, the same for every customer, and contrasts that with bargaining at the counter.

Bhima Jewellers says its gold is BIS 916 hallmarked and that every piece comes with a detailed price breakup. PMJ Jewels offers old-gold exchange, valuation and purity checks. Kandalaa House of Jewellery calls its gold HUID compliant and takes customised orders. If your family is exchanging old gold for the bridal set, get the exchange value in writing before you choose designs.

Silver for the mehendi, gold for the groom

If you want silver for the smaller functions, Kushals sells 92.5 sterling silver that it says is BIS hallmarked, including oxidised temple designs, and keeps separate bridal collections for the haldi, mehendi and sangeeth. It also sells 18K gold-plated sets in antique, kundan and zircon styles.

Grooms show up in the search data too: Pinterest searches for gold earring designs for men rose 850 per cent. In Bangalore, Kandalaa House of Jewellery lists men's kadas, chains, rings and pendants, and Nivara Diamonds and House of Quadri both make men's rings.

Questions to take to the counter

Take the same questions to every jeweller, so the quotes line up:

  • Is every gold piece BIS hallmarked, and can we check each HUID before we pay?
  • What is the making charge, and is there a wastage charge on top?
  • For diamonds, which lab issued the certificate, and what colour and clarity does it state?
  • What will you pay if we sell the piece back or exchange it, and are customised pieces covered?
  • When do we approve the design, and how long does the custom piece take after that?
  • Can we book the gold rate now and pay the balance closer to the wedding?

If you live abroad and have one planning trip, use it to take quotes and place any custom order; fittings can wait for the arrival week.

Questions couples ask

What is the difference between temple, kundan and polki jewellery?

Temple jewellery is heavy gold carved with deities such as Lakshmi, Ganesha and Krishna. Kundan sets polished gemstones in gold foil and is lighter than solid gold. Polki uses uncut, unpolished diamonds, usually set in gold over a lac base, which gives it a matte look.

Is a lab-grown diamond a real diamond?

Yes. It is carbon crystallised in a laboratory, by CVD or HPHT, with the same hardness and optical properties as a mined diamond, and a gemologist needs specialist equipment to tell them apart. Reia Diamonds, a lab-grown specialist, also says a mined diamond keeps the edge on rarity and open-market resale.

How do we check that bridal gold is genuine?

Ask for the BIS hallmark on every piece and check its HUID in the BIS Care app using Verify HUID, which shows the jeweller's registration. A BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centre will test a piece for a fee, and BIS rules set compensation at twice any purity shortfall plus the testing charges.

How much do lab-grown diamonds cost in Bangalore?

On 15 October 2026, Reia Diamonds charged a flat ₹35,000 a carat and Nivara Diamonds ₹50,000 a carat for IGI-certified stones of E colour and VVS clarity, with the setting and gold extra. Aukera's lab-grown diamond mangalsutras started at ₹64,682. Compare the grade on each certificate as well as the rate.

What bridal jewellery is trending in 2026?

Pinterest searches in India from December 2025 to February 2026, against a year earlier, rose 995 per cent for chandi jewellery, 895 per cent for aesthetic mangalsutra designs, 520 per cent for polki necklace sets and 275 per cent for kasulaperu designs in gold. On Google, lab-grown diamond searches ran about a third above the year before.

How early should we order wedding jewellery?

Take quotes about four months out and have rings and the mangalsutra in production by six to eight weeks before the wedding, since custom work can take four to six weeks. Some jewellers are quicker: Reia Diamonds usually delivers custom pieces in 7 to 14 days, and Nivara Diamonds quotes three to four weeks.
