Bridal mehendi designs: backhand, bow, lotus or full coverage
Decide how far up the arms and legs the design should go, then choose the motifs. Pinterest reported Indian searches for backhand mehndi designs up 920% year on year last winter, and Google Trends shows bow and lotus designs rising. Pushpa Mehndi Arts advises applying bridal mehendi 36 to 48 hours before the event.

Start with coverage: full arms, backhand or minimal
A full bridal set covers the hands front and back and runs up the arms, with the feet done to match. Artists price it by how far it goes and how detailed it is. Pushpa Mehndi Arts sets its six bridal packages by length: the smallest stops at the bangle line and the ankle and takes about four hours, and the largest runs above the elbow and up to the knee and takes six to seven.

The largest growth figure we found is for designs on the back of the hand. Pinterest reported Indian searches for backhand mehndi designs up 920% for December 2025 to February 2026, against the same months a year earlier. In Google searches related to mehndi design over the twelve months to 15 October 2026, aesthetic back-hand designs rose 160% and minimal designs 60%. These are growth rates, not counts of brides.

A minimal design leaves most of the forearm bare and puts the detail on the fingers and the back of the hand. Arabic designs sit between minimal and full coverage, with bold floral trails and more open skin. Sumaiya Henna Artist offers both, Mahi Mehndi Artist lists minimalist henna among its styles, and Anoop Mehandi Artist lists Arabic mehendi as its speciality on WedMeGood.

Bow, lotus, mandala or a story: choosing the motifs
In Google searches related to mehndi design in India over the twelve months to 15 October 2026, bow designs rose 300%, searches for "trending mehndi design" 180% and lotus designs 140%. A bow design is built around a ribbon bow. A lotus design puts the flower where a mandala would usually sit, in the centre of the palm or on the back of the hand.

Story designs take planning. Pushpa Mehndi Arts counts custom motifs per package, two in its smallest and no limit in its largest, and gives the bride and groom, elephants, peacocks and a proposal as examples. Sumaiya Henna Artist hides the groom's name in the pattern and offers a small portrait of the couple in the palm.

On WedMeGood, Professional Shah Mehandi Art and Shah Mehandi Arts list portrait mehendi as their speciality, and Shubh Muhurat Mehendi Arts and Suraj Mehandi Artist list baraat figures, the groom's procession drawn across the hands. Natural henna and the cone: what to ask
Several artists on our list describe their paste on their own sites. Pushpa Mehndi Arts says it uses herbal ingredients with no chemicals or preservatives and mixes the paste by hand at least four hours before use. Sumaiya Henna Artist says she makes hers from henna powder, eucalyptus and clove oil and sugar, with no added dyes such as PPD. Mahi Mehndi Artist says its paste is 100% natural henna.

These are the artists' own descriptions, so ask to see what goes into the cone. If anyone in the family has reacted to henna before, ask for a patch test at the trial; Sumaiya Henna Artist's site suggests the same.

Questions worth asking every artist before you book:
- What goes into the cone, and when was it mixed?
- How long will the bridal set take, and how many artists will work on it?
- Is there a trial, is it free, and how many days before the wedding should it be?
- What does travel cost from the artist's base to the venue?
- How much advance do you take, and what happens if the date moves?
- Who does the guests' mehendi, and how many guests can the team finish in an hour?
When to book, when to apply it and how long it takes
The colour keeps darkening after the mehendi goes on. Pushpa Mehndi Arts says it darkens for up to 48 hours, recommends applying the mehendi 36 to 48 hours before the event, and asks brides to keep the paste on for at least five hours.

Read what each price covers. Guest mehendi is priced separately: Pushpa Mehndi Arts bills artists by the hour for events with more than ten guests, with a three-hour minimum, and Sumaiya Henna Artist prices guests per person. Travel can be extra, and Pushpa charges by distance once the venue is more than 10 km from Majestic.

Where the mehendi sits in the wedding plan
If the guests want mehendi at the function, the bride's set and the guests' designs run side by side. Ask how many artists come for the bride and how many for the guests, and where they will sit: the artists need good light, and the bride needs a comfortable chair for several hours.
Panigrahana Weddings plans and designs weddings. We do not apply mehendi, and we take no commission from vendors, so you book the artist and pay the artist directly. If we are planning your wedding, send us the artist's name and the hours they need, and we will build the seating, the light and the timing into the function plan.

The figures measure growth in searches, not how many brides choose a style.
How long before the wedding should bridal mehendi be applied?
Pushpa Mehndi Arts recommends 36 to 48 hours before the event, because the colour keeps darkening for up to 48 hours. It also asks brides to keep the paste on for at least five hours, so leave that time free in the schedule.
How long does bridal mehendi take to apply?
