Destination Weddings — Sri Lanka
Last updated: June 2026
A short flight from India, dramatically more affordable than Bali, and astonishingly varied — private beach bays, the UNESCO Galle Fort, Geoffrey Bawa's jungle architecture and highland Kandy. This is your complete hub for planning an Indian or NRI wedding in Sri Lanka: venues, real costs in ₹, legal requirements, season and flights.
For an Indian or NRI couple weighing destination options, Sri Lanka quietly wins on the points that matter most. It is the closest international destination to India — Colombo is under 1.5 hours from Chennai and around 3.5 hours from Delhi — so guests arrive fresh, attendance holds up, and there are none of the long-haul connections that thin out a Bali or Thailand guest list.
The variety is extraordinary for such a small island. You can marry on a private curved bay at Tangalle, on a clifftop terrace 60 metres above Weligama Bay, inside the 17th-century walls of Galle Fort, in Geoffrey Bawa's lake-and-jungle masterpiece above Kandalama, or in the cool sacred highlands of Kandy. Few destinations offer beach, heritage, highland and wildlife settings within a few hours' drive of each other.
And it is exceptional value. Sri Lanka is typically 20–30% less expensive than a comparable Bali or Phuket wedding, the Indian Rupee has strong purchasing power against the Sri Lankan Rupee, and the island's catering and floristry ecosystems are deeply experienced with Indian celebrations — mandap and ritual space, multi-day programming, and full vegetarian and non-veg menus are all routine. Panigrahana has direct relationships with every venue in this guide and designs and builds decor in-house, with no outsourced catalogues.
A summary of the venues Panigrahana rates most highly for Indian weddings, across beach, heritage, highland and wildlife settings. For the full comparison — capacity, price and suitability for Indian celebrations — read our dedicated venues guide linked below.
The finest small beach resort on the island: a perfectly curved private bay, low-slung teak-and-stone Aman pavilions and exceptional catering that can produce full Indian menus. Best for an intimate buyout. Around ₹10–15 lakh per night.
A dramatic headland above Weligama Bay with the Indian Ocean visible in nearly every direction. The clifftop terrace, 60 metres above the water, is spectacular for ceremonies and evening receptions. Around ₹8–13 lakh per night for full buyout.
Inside the UNESCO World Heritage Galle Fort, in one of its oldest colonial buildings. Dutch colonial architecture, a garden courtyard, and portraits on the fort ramparts and lighthouse — genuinely one-of-a-kind. Around ₹12–18 lakh per night.
Sri Lanka's historic grand hotel (opened 1864) and the most practical choice for a large Indian wedding — a 500+ ballroom, ocean-facing event lawns, 153 rooms and a central location. Around ₹4–8 lakh for event space, plus rooms and catering.
Geoffrey Bawa's masterpiece, built to grow out of the jungle hillside above Kandalama Lake with views to Sigiriya Rock. 162 rooms and large event spaces make it ideal for cultural-triangle weddings. Around ₹3–6 lakh for event hire, plus rooms.
The south coast's largest luxury resort venue — 151 rooms and villas, extensive event lawns and a team experienced in Indian weddings. The practical choice when you want wild Indian Ocean beauty plus the infrastructure for a big celebration. Catering ₹2,500–4,000 per plate.
Also worth knowing: Wild Coast Tented Lodge at Yala (a safari-and-beach wedding for 10–30 guests) and the newly opened Capella Kandy (highland luxury above the sacred city, up to 80 guests). Eight venues are compared in full in the dedicated guide.

The line items. Venue hire spans ₹5–18 lakh per night depending on whether you take a partial booking or a full property buyout. Catering — where Sri Lanka's advantage over Bali is most pronounced — runs ₹2,000–4,500 per plate for full Indian menus. Decor and floristry are ₹4–10 lakh, helped by Sri Lanka's abundant tropical flowers (frangipani, lotus, orchids, jasmine). Photography is ₹3–6 lakh, typically with an India-based team whose travel is included.
Why it works out cheaper. Sri Lanka's venue market is less saturated than Bali's, catering is ₹500–1,500 per plate lower for comparable quality, and local decor is more competitively priced. Across a full wedding the saving versus a comparable Bali production can reach ₹10–20 lakh. Panigrahana provides three transparent budget scenarios — essential, recommended and premium — at the outset, with every vendor invoice passed through at cost and zero hidden vendor markup.

Sri Lanka permits Indian nationals to legally register a marriage on the island under the Marriage Registration Ordinance. The route requires a few clear steps: valid passports and original birth certificates for both parties; an Affidavit of Single Status (Certificate of Non-Impediment) sworn in India; apostille certification of those documents by India's Ministry of External Affairs; a minimum 21-day Notice of Intended Marriage to the Registrar General; two witnesses; and both parties present in Sri Lanka for the ceremony. Allow a minimum of 3 months, ideally 4, to clear the apostille and notice timelines comfortably.
The simpler, more popular path. Most Indian couples conduct a symbolic ceremony in Sri Lanka — full rituals, a pandit or officiant, the whole celebration — and complete the legal registration in India under the Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act, before or after the trip. This removes all documentation pressure from the destination planning and is completely valid. Panigrahana coordinates either path end to end.
Apostilled documents, 21-day notice, both parties present. Produces an internationally recognised Sri Lankan certificate. Best for couples who want everything finalised on the island.
Legally register in India under the Hindu Marriage Act / Special Marriage Act; celebrate fully in Sri Lanka. Simpler, no apostille pressure — the route most couples choose.
For the complete document checklist, the apostille process, the Registrar General steps and timelines, read Sri Lanka Wedding Legal Requirements for Indian Couples.
Sri Lanka has two monsoon patterns, which means there is almost always a region that is dry. For the south and west coasts — Tangalle, Weligama, Galle and Colombo, where most Indian beach and heritage weddings happen — the best window is roughly November to April, dry and at its most beautiful. This aligns neatly with the Indian and NRI winter-wedding calendar.
For the cultural triangle and highlands — Kandy and Kandalama — the seasons run differently; these inland areas are most pleasant from roughly January to September. The most sought-after small properties (Amanwella, Cape Weligama, Amangalla) book out 12–18 months ahead for peak season, so early enquiry is essential.
Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport is well connected with direct flights from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Kochi. Flight times are short — under 1.5 hours from Chennai, around 3.5 hours from Delhi. Return fares run roughly ₹8,000–18,000 from South India and ₹15,000–28,000 from North India, depending on season and advance booking.
Indian nationals enter on an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). The short hop means no long-haul fatigue and no expensive connections — a genuine, practical advantage that lifts both attendance and guest mood. Panigrahana manages guest travel and accommodation logistics as part of full planning.

Sri Lanka is one of the most practical and beautiful destinations for an Indian or NRI wedding. It is a short flight from India — under 1.5 hours from Chennai and around 3.5 hours from Delhi — so guests avoid long-haul fatigue and expensive connections. It offers extraordinary variety: private beach bays at Tangalle and Weligama, the UNESCO Galle Fort, Geoffrey Bawa's jungle-and-lake architecture at Kandalama, and highland Kandy. Crucially, it is typically 20–30% less expensive than a comparable Bali or Phuket wedding, the Indian Rupee has strong purchasing power against the Sri Lankan Rupee, and Sri Lanka's familiarity with Indian celebrations makes catering, ritual space and multi-day programming straightforward.
A Sri Lanka destination wedding for Indian couples typically ranges from ₹25–40 lakh for an intimate 30–50 guest celebration at a mid-luxury venue, ₹40–60 lakh for 60–100 guests at a premium venue, to ₹60–80 lakh for an 80–120 guest celebration with a full property buyout. As an approximate guide for NRI families, that is roughly USD 30,000–95,000 (approx, varies with exchange rate). Venue buyouts run ₹5–18 lakh per night, catering ₹2,000–4,500 per plate, decor ₹4–10 lakh and photography ₹3–6 lakh. Panigrahana contracts in INR and provides three transparent budget scenarios at the outset.
Yes. Sri Lanka is typically 20–30% less expensive than Bali for an equivalent luxury Indian wedding. Venue hire rates are lower because the market is less saturated, catering per plate is ₹500–1,500 lower for comparable quality, and local floristry and decor are more competitively priced. Across a full wedding, the saving versus a comparable Bali production can amount to ₹10–20 lakh.
Yes. Sri Lanka permits Indian nationals to register a marriage on the island under the Marriage Registration Ordinance. It requires apostilled documents from India's Ministry of External Affairs, a 21-day notice to the Registrar General, and both parties present in Sri Lanka. The resulting certificate has international legal validity. However, most Indian couples choose a symbolic Sri Lanka ceremony with the legal registration completed in India (under the Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act) — equally valid and far simpler to manage. Panigrahana coordinates either path.
For the south and west coasts — Tangalle, Weligama, Galle and Colombo — the best season is roughly November to April, when these coasts are dry and at their most beautiful. This window aligns well with the Indian and NRI winter-wedding calendar. The cultural triangle and highlands (Kandy, Kandalama) sit on a different monsoon pattern and are most pleasant from roughly January to September. The most sought-after small properties book out 12–18 months ahead for peak season, so early enquiry is essential.

Return fares from South India run roughly ₹8,000–18,000 and from North India roughly ₹15,000–28,000 depending on season and advance booking.
