NRI families from the US, UK, and Singapore converged on Bangalore — and the Grand Ballroom, transformed into a 1920s Bombay Art Deco fantasy, received its own standing ovation at the reception entrance.

Sudarshan and Lakshmi had been living in San Jose for nine years when they decided to marry in Bangalore. Their families — his from Chennai, hers from Mysore — had kept their social networks intact across three continents, and the 500-guest count reflected that extraordinary reach. The operational challenge: coordinate arrivals from eight cities across three countries, with hotel blocks at four Bangalore properties, and still deliver a wedding that felt personal rather than corporate.

The JW Marriott's Grand Ballroom on Vittal Mallya Road was selected for its operational excellence and its physical scale — the only ballroom in central Bangalore that could absorb 500 guests without the room feeling overwhelmed. Our production team worked for 36 hours to transform it. The design brief was a 1920s Bombay Art Deco fantasy: geometric brass inlay patterns on the drape panels, black and gold tablescapes, a mandap constructed with the proportions of a Bombay cinema-era stage.

The reaction at the reception entrance — when the doors opened and the 500 guests saw the transformed room for the first time — was a collective intake of breath followed by sustained applause. It is the only time in our studio's history that a room design has received an ovation before the music began. The JW team, who had seen hundreds of productions in this space, stood at the back of the room and watched with the same expression as the guests.

Lakshmi's parents, who had not been back to Bangalore in four years, walked through the ballroom before any other guests and stood at the centre for a long time. 'This is our city,' her father said. 'And you made it look like this.' That homecoming quality — the feeling that your own city has given you its best — is what NRI weddings in India are really for.
