Varun and Preeti are both environmental engineers. When they came to us, the brief was unusual and specific: a luxury wedding with zero ecological compromise. Not greenwashing — actual zero synthetic materials, locally sourced everything, and a carbon footprint that they could account for and offset completely. ITC Gardenia, as India's first LEED Platinum-certified hotel, was the only Bangalore property whose own operational values matched the brief.

Every floral element was sourced from farms within 200 kilometres of Bangalore — Ooty roses, Bangalore jasmine, Karnataka marigold and crossandra. Zero imported flowers. Zero synthetic fabric. The mandap was constructed from reclaimed wood frames and organic cotton muslin, held together with natural jute rope. The lighting design used the hotel's own solar-powered grid exclusively.

The Peshwa Pavilion, dressed in organic whites and warm amber from incandescent rather than LED sources, produced a visual warmth that many guests described as unlike any wedding they had attended — an observation that confirmed our instinct that sustainability and beauty are not in tension. The constraints produced the aesthetic.

At the end of the evening, Varun stood up and thanked not just the families and the team, but the Karnataka farmers whose flowers had made the room. 'They grew what you see here,' he said. 'That is the full story.' It was the most unusual speech we have heard at a wedding reception in years, and the most genuine.
