Indian wedding venues price a wedding in one of three ways. Hotels and resorts work on a minimum guarantee: no hire fee, but each space must earn a minimum number of plates, and meeting it makes the space free. Standalone venues charge a day rental per function with catering separate. A minority quote both. Across the 279 venues in our database that publish a rate, 226 use a minimum guarantee, 40 a day rental and 13 quote both. If you fall short of a minimum guarantee, the shortfall is negotiable rather than billed at the full per-plate rate, and that single sentence is worth more than most negotiating advice.
Couples compare venues on the wrong number almost every time. One property quotes ₹4,000 a plate, another quotes ₹5 lakh a day, and there is no honest way to put those side by side until you know what each one is actually selling you.
We went through every venue in our own database and sorted them by how they quote. Here is the structure underneath the numbers, what each model does to your budget, and the clauses worth asking about before anything is signed.
The three models
1. Minimum guarantee — how hotels and resorts charge
A hotel usually charges no flat fee for the space at all. Instead, each space carries a minimum number of plates it has to earn. A ballroom might be set at 200. Bring 200 guests or more and the room is free; you are paying for food and nothing else. Bring 150 and you pay for the food plus a shortfall on the 50 plates you did not fill.
Two consequences follow, and both are worth money:
- Every space has its own number. The lawn, the ballroom and the terrace at one property will each carry a different floor. Ask for the minimum on each space, not the property, and you will often find your guest list fits one of them exactly.
- The shortfall is negotiable. If you come in under the guarantee, the gap is not normally charged at the full per-plate rate, and in practice it settles well below the headline. Almost nobody asks. Ask it in writing before you sign.
2. Day rental — how standalone venues charge
A standalone wedding venue has no plate floor. You pay a flat fee for the venue per function and bring whichever caterer you want at whatever rate you agree with them. The same applies at any property that permits outside catering.
This model is usually the one that makes a smaller wedding work, because the food bill is the part you control and a hundred-guest list does not have to clear anybody else’s floor. The trade-off is coordination: you are now managing a caterer as well as a venue.
3. Both — a rental plus a per-plate rate
A smaller group, mostly farm and banquet properties, quote a rental for the space and a catering rate on top. It reads as expensive because you can see both numbers, and it is often the most transparent of the three for exactly that reason. When you compare it against a hotel, remember the hotel’s space cost is real too, it is just buried in the plate rate.
Which model you will actually meet, by destination

Bangalore carries by far the most day-rental venues of the three, which is the practical reason a fixed budget reaches further there. Kerala is almost entirely minimum-guarantee, so in Kerala the lever is the per-plate rate and the guest count rather than the venue fee.
Day rates we can state, because we book them
These are properties we produce at repeatedly, so the figure is what is actually contracted rather than a listed rate. Rates move; treat these as the shape of the market and confirm for your date.

What to ask before you sign
- Which model is this, and what is the minimum on this specific space? Not the property. The space.
- If we come in under the minimum, what do we pay on the shortfall? In writing.
- Is the rate per function or per day? A two-function day and a two-day wedding are very different invoices.
- Which vendors are tied in? Sound, lighting and generator are the usual ones. Tied vendors are not necessarily worse, but they are not competitively bid, so you should know before you compare two venues.
- What moves the rate? Season, day of week, and whether you are taking the whole property. A Thursday in October and a Saturday in December are not the same venue.
- What is on top? 18% GST, service charge of 10–18% at most hotels, and anything the minimum does not cover.
