What Wedding Catering Costs Per Plate: Bangalore, Goa and Kerala Compared

Per-plate rates across the three markets we hold venue files in — what moves the number inside each city, why the same menu prices differently in each, and what the rate never includes.

The per-plate rate is the most quoted and least understood number in Indian wedding planning. Our group keeps venue files across three markets — over three hundred properties between Bangalore, Goa and Kerala, with confirmed catering rates where venues publish them — so this page can do what most cannot: put the three markets side by side, from held rates rather than hearsay.

The three markets, in bands

Bangalore runs the widest spread because it runs every venue type at once. Convention halls and mantapas open under ₹1,500 a plate for a straightforward vegetarian service; the mid-market hotel and resort band sits around ₹2,500–4,000; the five-star ballrooms run ₹3,000–5,000 and up before beverage. The city's structural quirk: many mantapas and halls allow outside caterers, which converts catering from a venue rate into a competitive quote — the single biggest budget lever the other two markets mostly lack.

Goa compresses the band upward. Confirmed rates in our Goa book start near ₹3,000 and run past ₹5,000 at the beachfront five-stars — there is no real budget tier, because there are few halls and the resorts hold the kitchens. Bar service moves the Goa number more than menu does, and the December multiplier applies to catering like everything else.

Kerala runs the widest honest range in the country: from roughly ₹2,500 at convention hotels to ₹20,000 a head at exclusive-use heritage kitchens. The state's day-rental auditorium culture keeps the low end genuinely low — the caterer is often the family's own choice — while the backwater resorts and palace properties price like the destinations they are.

Why the same menu prices differently in each market

Because the plate is carrying different loads. In Bangalore the rate is mostly food and service. In Goa it also carries the venue's monopoly — you cannot bring a caterer onto a resort's beach — and the season. In Kerala the low band assumes a sadya's economics: one cuisine, cooked at scale, served in sittings; ask that same kitchen for a multi-cuisine buffet with live counters and the rate leaves the band immediately. Comparing per-plate numbers across markets without knowing what each carries is how families conclude that somebody is cheating them. Usually nobody is.

What the per-plate rate never includes

The venue rental or minimum guarantee underneath it. Alcohol, almost always. Live counters, at a premium per counter or per plate. Vendor and crew meals, unless negotiated. Service charge and GST, which together move the printed rate meaningfully — always ask whether a quote is inclusive. And in Kerala's auditorium model, the hall itself: the caterer's rate and the venue's rent are two different bills. The number to compare across venues is never the plate rate; it is the projected total for your guest count with everything above included — our hidden-costs guide lists what "everything" means.

The one negotiation that works in all three markets

Not the rate — the count. Rates are published and defended; minimums and counts are neither. Children's plates at half, vendor meals at working rates, and a minimum set to your realistic list rather than the venue's optimistic one will move a catering bill by more than any menu haggling. Get each in writing. Then spend your energy where it actually shows: the tasting.
