Quick Answer · Planning From Abroad
You can plan an Indian wedding from abroad with two India trips — one to shortlist venues, one for the wedding itself — if the planning system does five things: design approvals from 3D renders, a written decision log, meeting minutes you can read on your own schedule, milestone payments quoted in your home currency, and one accountable contact on the ground. A large share of Panigrahana’s couples plan their weddings this way; the month-by-month version is below.
Distance is not the real problem. The real problem is that most wedding planning runs on phone calls and memory, and neither survives a timezone gap. A decision made on a Tuesday call in Bangalore reaches you as a half-remembered summary on Thursday; three weeks later nobody can say who approved what. Couples don’t fear being far away — they fear finding out too late.
The fix is structural, not heroic: every decision written down, every design approved from a render before it is built, every meeting minuted, every payment tied to a milestone. That is what our couple portal exists for — design presentations with feedback and approvals, meeting minutes, structured decisions, payments and a guest photo wall in one place. When the record is shared, distance stops mattering.
Assumes a 10–12-month runway. Compress it and the same gates apply, closer together.
| Stage | You, from abroad | Your family in India | Panigrahana |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12–9 months remote |
Fix guest count and budget band; agree the family decision hierarchy — who signs off on what. Shortlist destinations and dates over video calls. | Muhurtham consultation; surface non-negotiables early (rituals, communities, must-invite lists). | Venue options with real capacities and rates from our venue cost data; date-availability checks; first budget model. |
| 9–6 months TRIP 1 — 2–4 days |
The one visit that earns its airfare: walk the shortlist (2–3 venues), taste the food, meet the team, sign the venue. | Join the venue walks — their eyes on floors, kitchens, room quality matter. | Books the walk schedule tight so one trip covers everything; negotiates the venue terms while you are in the room. |
| 6–3 months remote |
Approve designs from decks — 3D renders and drawings, commented and signed off in the portal on your own schedule. | Outfit and jewellery runs; local vendor tastings where you delegate them. | Design development in-house; vendor locking; a written decision log so nothing is relayed from memory. |
| 3–1 months remote |
Guest logistics from your side: invitations, the wedding website and RSVPs, rooming preferences, travel manifests. | Final guest-list politics — settled in person where it belongs. | Production sheet locked — one exists for every wedding we produce; vendor reconfirmations; room-block management. |
| Wedding week TRIP 2 |
Arrive 5–7 days out, jet-lag buffer included. Your only jobs: fittings, rituals, and being present. | Receive early-arriving relatives; host duties, not logistics duties. | Runs the build, the schedule and the contingencies. You see the venue for the second time — finished. |
Remote works for: budget structure, guest count, date and venue shortlisting, full design development and approval, entertainment, photography, invitations, guest communication, payment schedules.
Worth doing in person: the venue walk before signing, food tastings, outfit fittings, and the wedding itself. That is one planning trip plus the wedding trip. If even one trip is hard, read whether a single-trip wedding is possible — it is, with caveats worth knowing.
Three mechanics matter more than the exchange rate. First, quotes in your own currency: we quote proposals for families abroad in your home currency, so you compare like with like. Second, milestone payments — money moves when a stage is delivered, not before. Third, GST itemised on every line so the quote you approve is the invoice you receive. For remittance limits and transfer mechanics from your country, confirm with your bank; rules change, and this page is general information, not tax advice. Registration has its own timelines — the marriage registration guide for couples living abroad covers the routes and residence windows.
Everything above is the same whether you live in New Jersey or Dubai. What changes is the clock, the length of the flight and a little paperwork, and those three things decide how many trips you make and when the weekly call lands. Roughly 300 of the 500+ weddings we have produced since 2016 were planned by families living abroad, the largest groups in the six countries below. Open yours.
India runs 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead of the East Coast and 12.5 to 13.5 hours ahead of the West Coast, depending on daylight saving. That sounds hostile and is actually convenient: your early morning is our working evening. An 8am call in New York lands at 5:30 to 6:30pm in Bangalore; a 7am call in San Francisco reaches us at 7:30 to 8:30pm. We also hold Eastern and Pacific evening slots, which are our early morning the next day. Either way you get one standing weekly slot and nobody takes a call at 2am. Between calls, decisions arrive as written documents with pricing in rupees and dollars, and end-of-day voice notes from Bangalore are waiting in your morning feed.
Air India flies nonstop from New York (JFK and Newark), San Francisco, Chicago and Washington to Delhi and Mumbai; Goa, Bengaluru and Kochi are then a domestic hop of one to three hours. One-stop routings also run through the Gulf (Emirates via Dubai, Etihad via Abu Dhabi, Qatar Airways via Doha) and Europe (Lufthansa via Frankfurt, British Airways via London). Count on roughly a day door to door, and book wedding-period travel four to six months ahead for the October to February peak.
Most US professionals can carve out one meaningful India trip a year, so the planning trip is typically 10 to 14 days and everything physical is compressed into it. Day 1: walk the final two venues (you land having already dropped the third from video walkthroughs) and sign. Days 2 and 3: tastings. Day 4: the decor presentation, with physical material samples. Days 5 and 6: outfit fittings and jewellery. Days 7 and 8: both families in one room. Days 9 and 10: contracts and the payment schedule. You fly home with every decision written down, and the next flight is the wedding.
A marriage registered in India is treated as a valid foreign marriage in the US; to have the Indian certificate accepted by US agencies you will generally need an apostille issued through India’s Ministry of External Affairs. Guests on US passports need an Indian e-visa, which takes a few days to process; guests of Indian origin holding an OCI card enter without one. This is general information, not legal advice: check the current rules on the official portals before anyone travels. Routes and residence windows for registering are in the marriage registration guide.
On our own YouTube channel, the wedding films couples in the US watch most are our Kannada and Tamil Brahmin Bangalore weddings: couples planning a full traditional ceremony from abroad, which is exactly the wedding our muhurtham-first process is built around.
Is an Indian marriage certificate valid in the USA?
Yes. A marriage registered under the Hindu Marriage Act or the Special Marriage Act in India is recognised as a valid foreign marriage by US authorities. US agencies will generally ask for an apostille on the Indian certificate, issued through India’s Ministry of External Affairs. We point you to the process and coordinate the on-ground appointments. This is general information rather than legal advice, so confirm the current requirement with the agency that will receive the certificate.
Which airline routes work best for guests flying from the USA to an Indian wedding?
Air India flies nonstop from New York (JFK and Newark), San Francisco, Chicago and Washington to Delhi and Mumbai, the most convenient options for East and West Coast guests. For Goa, Bengaluru or Kochi, guests connect through Delhi or Mumbai on a domestic leg of one to three hours. One-stop options also run via Gulf hubs (Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways) and European hubs (Lufthansa, British Airways). Book four to six months ahead for wedding travel in the October to February peak.
Can we plan the whole wedding in one 10 to 14 day India trip?
Yes, and that is how we structure it for most US couples: days 1 to 3 for the venue and tastings, day 4 for decor, days 5 and 6 for outfits, days 7 and 8 for family alignment, days 9 and 10 for sign-off. Everything else happens before and after the trip through the portal. The single-trip version, where you arrive only for the wedding week, is possible too; we have produced weddings that way.
India is 4.5 hours ahead of the UK in British summer time and 5.5 hours ahead in winter, the friendliest offset of any long-haul market. Your lunchtime is our late afternoon: a 1pm London call reaches Bangalore at 5:30 to 6:30pm, inside our working day. UK couples rarely need scheduled heroics; a standing early-afternoon slot covers the whole wedding, and we hold evening slots if your work week needs them.
Air India flies nonstop from Heathrow to Bangalore in around ten hours, and to Mumbai and Delhi. For Goa the Mumbai connection is under two hours, and in winter there are seasonal charter and package flights to Goa from regional UK airports, which matters for guests who cannot justify a long-haul fare through London. Many UK guests are in Goa within twelve hours door to door.
Two trips. The planning visit, six to nine months out, covers venue walk-throughs, the family alignment session with both sides in the room, tastings and design sign-off. Then the wedding. Because the flight is direct, the UK is the easiest market for a third, purely social trip if you want one; the system is built so you do not need it.
26 December to 5 January is one of the most popular windows for UK couples marrying in Goa: guests use their Christmas leave and the weather is at its best. Goa venues book out for that window 12 to 18 months ahead, so if that is your week, start early.
Most British-Indian couples run a two-ceremony structure: a civil ceremony in the UK (registry office or licensed venue) for legal recognition in Britain, then the religious wedding in India as the main event. The India ceremony can also be registered separately in India under the Hindu Marriage Act or the Special Marriage Act; the marriage registration guide explains how the two fit together. British-passport guests need an Indian e-visa; OCI card holders enter without one. Check current fees and processing times on the official portal before travel.
How manageable is the UK to India time difference for wedding planning?
Very. The UK is 4.5 hours behind India in summer and 5.5 hours in winter, so a 1pm London call lands at 5:30 to 6:30pm in Bangalore and most decisions happen inside normal working hours on both sides. It is the most convenient of the long-haul offsets, and UK couples tend to report a more relaxed planning run than couples in North America.
Do we register the marriage in the UK or in India?
Most British-Indian couples use a two-ceremony structure: a UK civil ceremony at a registry office or licensed venue for legal recognition in Britain, then the religious wedding in India as the main celebration. The India ceremony can also be registered separately in India under the Hindu Marriage Act or the Special Marriage Act. We manage the India ceremony end to end and guide you through Indian registration; the marriage registration guide on this site explains how the paperwork fits together.
Can we hold our Goa wedding over the UK Christmas break?
Yes, and many UK couples do: 26 December to 5 January is one of the most popular windows, because guests use their Christmas leave and Goa weather is at its best. The caveat is that Goa venues book out for that window 12 to 18 months in advance, and airfares peak but stay manageable when booked four to five months ahead. If this is your week, contact us as early as you can.
The Gulf is near-live. India is 1.5 hours ahead of UAE time: a 10am call in Dubai is 11:30am in Bangalore or Kochi, and your evening is still our working day. Approvals, vendor calls and site updates happen the same day. You can plan from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah almost like a local couple.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi have direct flights to nearly every Indian city. Bangalore, Kochi, Kozhikode and Goa are all three to four hours on Air India, IndiGo, flydubai, Air Arabia or Emirates, and the corridor is so heavily served that last-minute seats are usually available. Taj Bekal in north Kerala is reached through Kannur or Kozhikode.
Because travel is this cheap in time, Gulf couples often make three short trips instead of two long ones: a long weekend to shortlist, a long weekend for tastings and fittings, then the wedding. Either pattern works; the portal carries whatever you do not fly for.
The Gulf calendar is shaped by Ramadan and the summer heat. Weddings cluster in October and November and again in January and February, when Goa is also at its best. Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year; in 2026 and 2027 it falls in February and March, which makes January the most in-demand window. UAE National Day on 2 and 3 December gives a December wedding an anchor for extended leave. We hold venue dates with the Ramadan calendar in front of us.
For Hindu-Muslim families, halal-certified catering and a prominent non-alcoholic bar are written into the venue brief as contractual requirements rather than left as a request on the day. The five-star venues we work with in Goa, Bangalore and Kerala accommodate both.
How does Ramadan affect wedding dates for couples planning from the Gulf?
Gulf weddings planned from abroad cluster in October and November, after Eid and before the heat returns, and in January and February, which is also Goa’s peak season. Ramadan shifts about 11 days earlier each year; in 2026 and 2027 it falls in February and March, which makes January the most in-demand window. We plan venue holds with the Ramadan calendar in hand and advise on dates well ahead.
How do flights work from Dubai to Indian wedding destinations?
Dubai has exceptional India connectivity. Bangalore, Kochi, Kozhikode and Goa are each three to four hours on Air India, IndiGo, Emirates, flydubai or Air Arabia, with several departures a day. Kannur and Kozhikode serve the north Kerala coast. The UAE to India corridor is one of the most heavily served in the world, so last-minute availability is usually possible.
Can we have halal catering for a mixed Hindu and Muslim family wedding?
Yes. Halal-certified catering is specified as a contractual requirement in the initial venue brief, and the five-star venues we work with in Goa, Bangalore and Kerala accommodate it on request. Where a significant share of guests are from Muslim backgrounds we also make sure non-alcoholic beverages are prominently featured. This is a standard part of planning for Gulf-based families.
India runs 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead of Toronto and 12.5 to 13.5 hours ahead of Vancouver, depending on daylight saving, and the offset works for you: your morning is our evening. An 8am Toronto call lands at 5:30 to 6:30pm in Bangalore. Vancouver couples reach us in our late evening with their morning, or catch our morning with their own evening slot. We fix one standing weekly window per couple and hold it.
Air India flies nonstop Toronto to Delhi and Vancouver to Delhi; from Delhi, Goa, Bangalore and Kochi are a domestic flight of roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours. One-stop options run through London (Air Canada, British Airways), Frankfurt (Lufthansa) and Amsterdam (KLM). Plan on about a day door to door.
Two trips: a planning trip to confirm the venue, taste in person and meet the key vendors, then the wedding. For couples who arrived in Canada recently, the planning trip often doubles as the first family visit since emigrating.
Canadian-passport holders need an Indian e-visa. OCI card holders, and anyone still travelling on an Indian passport (which describes many recent arrivals), enter without one. We give you a guest travel information sheet to send to your list. For registering in India, under the Special Marriage Act or the relevant personal-law route, the marriage registration guide lists the documents to carry from Canada, the notice period and how the certificate is recognised when you return. General information; confirm current rules on the official portals.
For Punjabi-Canadian families the question is usually whether the Anand Karaj can happen at a destination venue. It can. We coordinate a qualified Granthi, including travel from Punjab where needed, the proper accommodation of the Guru Granth Sahib, and a ceremony space designed around it; we have run it at beach resorts, hotel ballrooms and garden venues.
Do Canadian citizens or PR holders need a visa for India?
Canadian citizens travelling on a Canadian passport need an Indian e-visa, applied for online and usually processed within a few days. OCI card holders and Canadian permanent residents still on Indian passports enter India without a visa, which covers many recent arrivals. We provide a guest travel information sheet for you to distribute to your guest list. Confirm current fees and processing times on the official portal before travel.
Which routes work best from Canada to Indian wedding destinations?
Air India flies nonstop from Toronto and from Vancouver to Delhi. From Delhi, domestic connections to Goa, Bangalore or Kochi take roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Air Canada codeshares with Air India on some routes, and Lufthansa via Frankfurt, British Airways via London and KLM via Amsterdam are popular one-stop alternatives, often with competitive business-class pricing.
Can we hold a traditional Anand Karaj at a Goa venue?
Yes. We regularly plan Anand Karaj ceremonies at destination venues in Goa, Bangalore and elsewhere. We coordinate a qualified Granthi, arranging travel from Punjab if needed, ensure the proper accommodation of the Guru Granth Sahib, and design the ceremony space with appropriate reverence. The Anand Karaj is treated as the spiritual and logistical centrepiece of the event, and we have executed it at beach resorts, hotel ballrooms and garden venues.
Australia is the easy one. India runs 4.5 hours behind the eastern states on standard time, 5.5 behind during daylight saving, and 2.5 behind Perth. Your evening is our afternoon: a 7pm Sydney call reaches Bangalore at 1:30 to 2:30pm, and our morning still catches your afternoon. Of every market we plan from, Australia needs the least calendar engineering.
Air India flies Sydney to Delhi nonstop in about 12 hours, with a two-hour domestic connection to Bangalore or Goa. One-stop routings via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur connect the east coast to Bangalore in roughly 12 to 14 hours of flying. Bali is about six hours from Sydney and 3.5 from Perth, which is why the Bali question exists.
Two trips: a planning trip of five to seven days, four to eight months out, to lock the venue, meet your lead designer in person and finalise the look; then the wedding. Some Australian couples add a third, purely social trip. The system does not require it.
Australian couples are the one market that genuinely weighs Bali against India, and because we plan both we have no reason to push either. The arithmetic usually decides it. Australian guests fly shorter and cheaper to Bali; family in India fly domestic to Goa or Bangalore but international to Bali; and the ceremony itself (the muhurtam, the saptapadi, the kanyadanam) sits more naturally at home. A guest list that is mostly Australia-based points to Bali. A heavy India-based list, or a ceremony that is the point of the wedding, points to India. The Bali wedding guide covers the villa and resort side.
Should we choose Bali or India for a wedding planned from Australia?
We plan both, so the honest answer depends on your situation. Bali wins when the guest list is mostly Australia-based (a shorter, cheaper flight) and the celebration matters more than the ritual. India wins when the Indian ceremony is central, when family in India cannot travel internationally, and when the homecoming matters. We work through the full guest-travel cost matrix early, because total guest travel cost is often what decides it.
Which routes connect Australia to Indian wedding destinations?
Singapore Airlines via Singapore is the most consistent option from Sydney or Melbourne to Bangalore, about 14 hours in total. Air India flies Sydney to Delhi nonstop in about 12 hours, with a two-hour domestic connection to Bangalore or Goa. Qantas codeshares on some India routes, and IndiGo and AirAsia connect Singapore to Goa and Bangalore affordably. For Perth-based guests, Bali is a 3.5-hour direct flight.
Can Panigrahana plan a Bali wedding for an Australian-Indian couple?
Yes. Alongside India we plan destination weddings in Bali: private villa buyouts in Seminyak and Canggu and resort weddings around Ubud, with the Indian ritual requirements (pandit, ceremony structure, traditional decor) accommodated within a Balinese venue. The Bali wedding guide on this site has the detail.
Singapore sits 2.5 hours ahead of India, an offset you can ignore. Any working hour in Singapore overlaps a working hour in Bangalore, and a 6pm Bangalore call is 8:30pm in Singapore, after work with both partners present. Of all our couples abroad, Singapore-based ones plan closest to the local experience.
Direct flights connect Singapore and Bangalore in about four to four and a half hours on IndiGo, Air India and Singapore Airlines; Chennai, Kochi and Goa are all around four hours. Bali is 2.5 hours away. A venue visit is a long weekend, not an expedition.
Two trips is the comfortable pattern: a focused three to four day planning visit early on to lock the venue, meet your lead designer and run the tastings and recces, often folded into a family visit; then the wedding.
Singapore citizens of Indian origin with an OCI card enter India without a visa; Singapore citizens without one need the Indian e-visa; permanent residents still on Indian passports need nothing. Confirm current rules on the official portal before travel, and see the marriage registration guide for registering in India.
The India-or-Bali question exists for Singapore couples too, with a different calculus: Bali is closer than any Indian city. When a large share of guests are Singaporean or expat colleagues, Bali is easier for everyone. When the ceremony and the homecoming are the point, India wins. We plan both and put guest travel costs from both sides on the table early.
Why is Singapore the easiest place to plan an Indian wedding from?
Singapore is 2.5 hours ahead of India, so a 10am Bangalore call is 12:30pm in Singapore and a 6pm India call is 8:30pm in Singapore; there is no real out-of-hours burden for either side. Direct flights to Bangalore take about four to four and a half hours, so you can attend a venue meeting in India and be home the same weekend. Of all the countries we plan from, Singapore-based couples meet the least friction.
Should a Singapore-based couple marry in India or Bali?
We plan both, and the answer depends on your guest list and priorities. Bali, 2.5 hours from Singapore, works best when a significant share of guests are Singapore-based non-Indians who find Bali more accessible than India. India wins when the Indian ceremony is central, when family in India cannot travel internationally, and when the cultural homecoming matters. We walk every Singapore couple through this with guest travel costs from both sides.
Do Singapore-based couples need a visa to marry in India?
Singapore citizens of Indian origin holding an OCI card enter India without a visa. Singapore citizens without an OCI card need the Indian e-visa, applied for online and usually processed within a few days. Singapore permanent residents still on Indian passports need no visa. Many Singapore-based Indian professionals hold an OCI card or an Indian passport, so the paperwork for India travel is minimal. Confirm current rules on the official portal before travel.
Can we really plan an Indian wedding without living in India?
Yes. Most of the planning happens over structured video calls and a couple portal — design presentations with feedback and approvals, meeting minutes, structured decisions and payments in one place. What genuinely needs you in India is a venue shortlist visit and the wedding itself; nearly everything else can be decided remotely when the process is built for it.
How many trips to India do we actually need?
Two is comfortable for most couples: one venue-and-tastings trip around six to nine months out, and the wedding trip itself. A single-trip wedding is possible when the planning system carries everything else remotely — we have produced weddings that way.
How do design approvals work when we are in another timezone?
You approve from renders, not promises. Our studio shares design decks — 3D renders and drawings — before anything is built, you comment and approve in the portal on your own schedule, and the approved deck is what our in-house team then builds. The biggest remote-planning risk is imagining one thing and being handed another; the deck-approval gate removes it.
How do payments work from abroad?
Proposals are quoted in your home currency, payments are structured against milestones rather than lump sums, and GST is itemised on every quote so you can see exactly what you are paying. For transfer limits and the mechanics of remitting from your country, confirm current rules with your bank — regulations change and we do not give tax advice.
Who coordinates our parents in India while we are abroad?
One accountable contact from our side, and a shared record on yours. Decisions, meeting minutes and approvals live in the portal, so your family in India and you see the same state of the wedding — nobody relays anything from memory, and nothing important lives only in a WhatsApp thread.
