Ajith & Riya
Dubai → Banyan Tree Phuket, Bang Tao, Phuket
Every guest with their own private pool, a blessing by Hindu pandit and Thai Buddhist monk simultaneously, and a reception the Banyan Tree team called the finest they had hosted — five days that felt like a private resort takeover.
Banyan Tree Phuket's all-pool-villa architecture means that every villa at the property has its own private pool. When Ajith and Riya chose Banyan Tree for their wedding, this detail transformed the hospitality calculation: 70 guests, each with a private pool, for 5 days. The wedding became a private resort takeover, with the celebration as the shared event and the villas as the private retreats.
The Thai-Indian hybrid ceremony was the creative and spiritual centrepiece of the five days. Ajith is from a Malayali family; Riya grew up in Bangkok. Her family's spiritual tradition is Theravada Buddhist; his is Hindu. Rather than choosing one or subordinating the other, we designed a ceremony in which both were given equal weight and simultaneous presence: the Hindu pandit on the left of the mandap, the Thai Buddhist monk on the right, the blessing conducted in both traditions as a single unified ritual.
The design reflected this duality explicitly. The mandap combined South Indian temple proportions with Thai spirit house aesthetics — the architectural forms were distinct, but the materials — flower, silk, gold — were shared. The colour palette was a deliberate intersection: the red and gold of Hindu auspiciousness, the saffron and white of Buddhist tradition. The result was genuinely bicultural rather than a fusion compromise.
The Banyan Tree's events director, who had produced weddings at the property for 12 years, told our team afterward: 'This is the finest event we have hosted.' We have heard variations of this statement at other properties. At Banyan Tree Phuket, from that particular director, it carried a specific weight. We accepted it accordingly.
