Gautam & Nandini
Singapore → Amanpuri, Pansea Beach, Phuket
The original Aman resort, opened in 1988 on Phuket's most private beach — 45 guests in the main sala, the Andaman Sea through a canopy of coconut palms, and Aman's legendary simplicity demanding a design of restraint.
Amanpuri opened in 1988 on Pansea Beach, Phuket, as the first Aman resort — the property from which all subsequent Aman properties have inherited their philosophy of stillness, restraint, and the primacy of the natural environment. When Gautam and Nandini chose it, they were choosing not just a venue but a design philosophy, and the brief they gave us was Aman's own: subtract everything that does not serve the moment.
The design approach was the most disciplined our studio had applied to a Thailand wedding. No uplighting, no fabric draping, no constructed backdrop. The sala's own architecture — its proportions, its orientation toward the sea, its relationship to the coconut palms — was used as the ceremony environment without augmentation. The only addition was a mandap of natural palm frond and white lotus that matched the building's material language exactly.
Forty-five guests was the ceremony's social scale — close enough to be a gathering, small enough to be genuinely intimate. The Andaman Sea, visible through the sala's open walls and the palm canopy beyond, was the horizon that gave the ceremony its depth. The pandit's voice, unamplified, filled the sala and reached the palms at the perimeter.
At the reception dinner on the private terrace, overlooking the bay at moonrise, Nandini said something that we have since shared as the most precise articulation of what luxury means in a wedding context: 'I have never felt this undistracted in my life.' At Amanpuri, with 45 people and the Andaman Sea and nothing else, that is what the place produces.
