Nandan & Revathi
Abu Dhabi → Taj Bekal Resort & Spa, Kasaragod, North Kerala
The only venue in India where an infinity pool appears to merge with the Arabian Sea at the edge of a 17th-century fort — an 80-guest sunrise ceremony that stopped conversations when the photographs were shared.
Taj Bekal sits on a promontory in Kasaragod, North Kerala, where the Bekal Fort meets the sea and the backwaters meet the beach. The infinity pool is positioned at the precise junction of these three geographies — pool, sea, and backwater sky visible simultaneously from the pool deck. When Nandan and Revathi saw the first photograph, they called us the same evening. 'There is only this venue,' Nandan said. 'How do we book it?'
The sunrise ceremony was dictated by the Bekal light — at this latitude, the January sunrise over the backwater horizon to the east produces a low orange light that travels across the pool surface for approximately 22 minutes before rising above the optimal angle. Our team scheduled the ceremony to begin as the first light touched the pool deck at 6:08am, and to conclude before the sun cleared the horizon line at 6:30am.
The pookalam — 40,000 individual flowers laid in a traditional Kerala pattern by our team from 2am onwards — was complete before first light. As the guests arrived at 5:45am, they walked through the dark resort to the pool deck with the pookalam glowing in the torchlight, the sound of the sea ahead and the backwater silence behind. Every person later described the arrival as the most atmospheric moment of their life.
Revathi's sadya reception — served on banana leaves by a team from Kannur — fed 80 guests with 28 separate dishes. Three elderly relatives, who had spent 40 years outside Kerala, sat at the sadya and did not speak for several minutes. They were eating their childhood. That silence is what the best Kerala weddings produce.
