Under the century-old rain trees of Taj West End — the mandap built beneath the signature tree, lit by 3,000 warm-white lights, photographed like it was taken in a dream.

The Taj West End's 20 acres of botanical garden contain trees that have been growing since the hotel was founded in 1887. The property's signature rain tree — an ancient specimen at the heart of the garden — spreads its canopy across a diameter of nearly 30 metres. It is one of the most photographed trees in Bangalore, and one of the most requested ceremony locations our team receives. Nitin and Aarohi requested it in their first conversation with us.

Building a mandap beneath an ancient rain tree requires structural ingenuity rather than creative ambition. Every support point must be positioned to avoid the root system; no element may touch the tree itself; the electrical installation must be suspended from external anchor points rather than attached to the branches. Our production team spent two site visits mapping the root geometry before we could begin the structural design.

The result was a mandap of four gossamer-fabric columns, anchored beyond the root system, with a suspended canopy of 3,000 individual warm-white LED points at varying heights — designed to mimic the tree's own interior light texture when the sun filters through the leaves in the morning. At night, the effect was of the mandap floating inside a constellation.

The photographs — taken by three different photographers who had all worked at Taj West End before — produced a consensus: this was the most beautiful thing any of them had seen at this property. 'The tree has been here for 130 years,' one photographer told us. 'It has never looked like this.' Neither had any of us.
