For an Indian wedding in Europe, guests on Indian passports need a Schengen visa (applications open six months before travel, normally decided within fifteen calendar days once lodged). A legally binding civil marriage in Italy, Greece, Spain or Portugal requires consular no-objection certificates, apostilled and translated documents and, in some countries, a residency or notice period, which is why most Indian couples hold the Hindu, Sikh or Christian ceremony in Europe and register the marriage in India under the Special Marriage Act or the Hindu Marriage Act.
Schengen visas for guests
Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, France and Switzerland are Schengen states. Indian passport holders apply at the consulate of the country of main stay (the wedding country), through its visa centre. Applications may be lodged up to six months before travel and are normally decided within fifteen calendar days, extending to forty-five in exceptional cases; summer appointments fill early. Each guest needs the invitation, the venue's booking confirmation, flight and hotel bookings, bank statements and travel insurance. We issue the invitation pack with a document checklist and coordinate a visa agency for the group; guests lodge their own applications and give biometrics in person.
A civil marriage in Europe
A civil ceremony recognised in India is possible in Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal but is paperwork-heavy: a certificate of no impediment or no-objection from the Indian consulate, birth certificates and affidavits apostilled in India, sworn translations, and in Italy the nulla osta and a declaration before the comune; Spain and Portugal add residency or notice conditions that make a tourist-visit civil wedding impractical for most couples. Allow eight to twelve weeks of document work and confirm current rules with the consulate for your wedding year.
The route most Indian couples take
Hold the religious ceremony in Europe — Hindu pheras, an anand karaj, a church wedding — and register the marriage in India under the Special Marriage Act or the Hindu Marriage Act before or after travelling. The Indian certificate is what banks, passports and visas will ask for; the European ceremony is the wedding.
Other rules that shape the day
Sound. Outdoor amplified music is set by the municipality; Lake Como, the Amalfi coast and the Greek islands commonly close it at or before midnight. Fire and open flame. The havan fire and fireworks need the venue's and often the commune's permission; some villas refuse both. Drones and photography. Restricted over towns, lakes and heritage sites — permits are applied for weeks ahead. Alcohol. Served by the venue under its own licence; outside supply is rarely allowed. We put every one of these in writing with the venue before the contract is signed.
