Wedding cost content on the internet comes in ranges wide enough to be useless — "₹10 lakh to ₹1 crore" answers nothing. What follows are three complete budgets worked line by line from the venue rates we hold and the enquiry data we log. They are worked scenarios, not invoices from named clients: every assumption is stated so you can bend the budget to your own numbers, and where a line varies too much to state honestly, it says so instead of pretending.
Wedding one: 600 guests, convention hall, Kerala — ~₹11 lakh
The classic big Kerala wedding: morning muhurtham, lunch sadya, one day, everyone invited.
Venue — a good convention hall or kalyana mandapam on a day rental with dining hall and changeover included: ₹1–1.5 lakh. Kerala's day-rental auditorium culture is why this wedding is possible at all at this price. Catering — the dominant line: 600 sadya covers at the lower catering band lands between ₹6 and ₹7.5 lakh, and this single line is two-thirds of the wedding. Decor — stage, entrance and mandapam concentrated where photographs happen: ₹1.5–2 lakh done well. Photography and film — ₹75,000–1.25 lakh for a solid team at this format. The quiet lines — generator, cleaning, sound permissions, transport for the two families: budget ₹50,000 and be pleased when it is less.
Where it bends: guest count, obviously — but note how gently. A hundred fewer guests saves only the catering line, about ₹1.2 lakh; the venue and decor barely move. Big Kerala weddings are efficient machines.
Wedding two: 150 guests, beach resort, Goa — ~₹21 lakh
The destination weekend: guests flying in, two nights, sangeet plus wedding.
Stay — the biggest line. Around 78 rooms for two nights at a good four-star's group rate is ₹6.5–8 lakh, and it is this line — not food — that makes destination weddings expensive. Catering — two dinners and a wedding lunch against the venue's minimum: at Goa's ₹3,000–4,000 band across three meals, ₹5–6.5 lakh. Decor and production — a beach ceremony build plus a sangeet set: ₹3.5–5 lakh at our standard; this is the line with the widest honest range because it is the one you design. Photography — a destination team for three days: ₹1.5–2.5 lakh. Permissions, transfers, quiet lines — beach permissions, airport shuttles for 150, sound licences: ₹1–1.5 lakh together.
Where it bends: the calendar. This exact wedding in October books materially cheaper than in late December — the venue rate, the room rate and even vendor travel all move together. The month is worth more than any negotiation.
Wedding three: 300 guests, five-star hotel, Bangalore — ~₹28 lakh
The city wedding at scale: evening muhurtham or reception format, most guests local, one marquee venue.
Venue and catering — at a Bangalore five-star this is one line, priced per plate against a minimum: 300 plates around the ₹3,000–3,500 city band with hall rental folded in lands at ₹9.5–11 lakh across the events. Decor — ballroom weddings live and die on decor because the room gives you nothing free: ₹6–9 lakh for a designed wedding rather than a template one, and this is where our in-house build earns its keep. Photography and film — ₹2–3 lakh for a full team across two events. Rooms — smaller than Goa because most guests go home: 25–35 rooms for outstation family, ₹2–3 lakh. Quiet lines — valet, licences, sound, the after-party: ₹1–1.5 lakh.
Where it bends: the minimum guarantee. The same hotel quoting 300 plates against a 400-plate minimum silently adds ₹3 lakh; the negotiation that fixes the minimum to your real number is the highest-value hour in the whole planning year. Our hidden costs guide lists the other clauses that move totals after signing.
What the three budgets teach, side by side
Each format has one dominant line and it is never the same one: catering in Kerala, rooms in Goa, decor in Bangalore. Know which wedding you are having and you know where negotiation matters and where it is noise. And every budget above assumes the discipline the format allows — the Kerala wedding stays one day, the Goa wedding respects its minimum, the Bangalore wedding puts money where the room is bare. Break the format and the budget follows you out the door. For your own numbers on your own date, the calculator is a start and a conversation is better.
