A resort suspended between cliff and sky, an award-winning architecture entirely open to the Indian Ocean, and a mandap of cascading white orchids that appeared to float in the breeze 150 metres above the surf.

Alila Villas Uluwatu is an architectural achievement — a resort that appears to exist in the space between the Uluwatu cliff and the Indian Ocean sky, with no walls on the ocean side and the Bali horizon as the primary visual element. Vikrant and Priya came to us with the building's photographs rather than wedding reference images. 'The building is the brief,' Vikrant said. 'We just need you to put a ceremony inside it.'

The design challenge was the inverse of most venues: rather than filling a space that needed intervention, we were working with an architecture so complete that addition risked becoming subtraction. Our answer was a single, quietly extraordinary element: a mandap of cascading white tropical orchids, suspended on a tensioned monofilament system from the villa's existing structural beams, positioned to move freely in the ocean breeze while maintaining its visual coherence.

At 150 metres above the surf, the breeze was constant and significant — the orchid cascade moved continuously throughout the ceremony, creating a living, breathing quality that static floral structures cannot produce. The 70 guests, seated in the architecture's open plan with the ocean on three sides, watched the ceremony through a curtain of slowly moving white orchid. Several people described the effect as hallucinatory.

Priya, who had described her ideal wedding as 'something that doesn't feel like a wedding,' sent us a message two weeks after the event: 'It didn't feel like a wedding. It felt like something that had never happened before and will never happen again.' That is the standard we work toward at every venue we produce.
