A Goa Wedding for Gujarati, Punjabi and British Indian Families Flying From the UK

Around 300 of the 500-plus weddings we have planned since 2016 were for couples living abroad, and the British Indian families among them — Gujarati, Punjabi and South Indian — arrive with constraints a family flying from the Gulf does not have. The flight is long and only sometimes direct, the dates answer to a school calendar as well as a muhurtham, and the budget arrives in rupees while the household keeps its accounts in pounds.

Are there direct flights from the UK to Goa?

Yes, seasonally. TUI Airways runs seasonal charters from London Gatwick and Manchester into Goa's Manohar International Airport at Mopa, and Air India began scheduled flights from the same airport to London Gatwick on 21 July 2023. Outside those windows the dependable routing is a long-haul into Mumbai or Delhi and a short domestic hop.

Treat the direct service as a bonus rather than the plan: a charter is scheduled against the holiday market, not your wedding date, and a guest list of a hundred and fifty will not fit on it. The routing then does something to your room block that is easy to miss. Guests on a two-stop itinerary arrive a day early because the connection lands at dawn, and stay a day late because the return runs on alternate days. Which UK school-holiday windows line up with Goa's season?

October half term and February half term both sit inside Goa's season; the Christmas fortnight sits inside its most expensive window; Easter and summer sit outside it altogether. In England the school year runs in three terms, each split by a week-long half term, with a fortnight at Christmas and a fortnight at Easter.

Across 44 dated Goa weddings and enquiries in our records since January 2026, 81.8% fall between November and February. Goa does not have a busy season and a quiet one; it has a season, and then a gap. Families do ask about taking children out for the two days either side of a half term. In England that carries a published price: a penalty notice for unauthorised absence is £80 per parent per child, rising to £160 if it is not paid within 21 days, and each parent can receive at most two such fines for the same child in three years before the matter goes to court. What does a 150-guest Goa wedding cost, in pounds?

A 150-guest, two-day Goa wedding sits at ₹50–80 lakh, which is about £39,000 to £62,400. The room block, not the catering, sets the floor: 150 guests need 46–60 rooms, and the block contract has to carry 164–212 room-nights once the long-haul arrivals are counted.

Most beachfront Goa resorts price a wedding date as a room buyout rather than a lawn rental: on that date the rooms are the scarce thing, and a resort that gives you its lawn cannot sell them to anybody else that weekend, so it quotes the revenue it has agreed not to earn. Read the room count before the photographs. At 150 guests you need 46–60 rooms; if the buyout line names 69 or 82 or 100, you are paying for rooms you will not fill, and that gap is the real negotiation. The property whose inventory sits closest to your block is usually cheaper in total than a grander one with a lower headline plate rate. One caveat about the pound column: your contracts are written in rupees, so the rupee figure is the one you are agreeing to, and the pound figure moves with the rate between signature and settlement. Can an Anand Karaj be held at a Goa resort?

No — plan the Anand Karaj in a gurdwara. The Akal Takht's hukamnama is that an Anand Karaj can take place only in a gurdwara, and Sikh authorities have reaffirmed that the ceremony should not be conducted at destination or resort venues. The resort then carries the mehendi, the sangeet, the reception and every meal.

For a Sikh family flying from the UK this is a sequencing question, not a cancellation. The ceremony is fixed to a gurdwara and a granthi, everything celebratory is fixed to the resort, and the two have to be booked against each other before either is confirmed: the gurdwara's availability and the travel time to the property decide the morning of the wedding day, and therefore the whole run of show. Two logistics carry over regardless. Do Goa five-stars require a room block, and can guests pay for their own rooms?

Most do, and yes they can — but the block stays your contract. A resort holding its lawn for you attaches a committed room count to the date. Guests can book and pay for their own rooms inside that block at the group rate — many UK families run it exactly that way — but the count you commit to is the count you owe against.

Two clauses decide what that costs you. The release date is when unbooked rooms return to general inventory at no penalty; the attrition clause sets what you owe if you finish below the committed count after it. We commit conservatively and negotiate two release steps rather than one, because adding rooms later is a phone call while releasing them late is a negotiation. Send guests the group rate early for the same reason: a guest who books outside the block pays rack rate and takes a room-night out of your count at the same time.

Ask every shortlisted property for its room minimum in writing before anyone falls in love with a lawn. We publish no Goa room rates — there are none on record we would stand behind — so your block rate has to come from the property, for your dates, in writing.

What do UK guests wear across four days in Goa?

Light fabrics, and four to five outfits rather than eight. October runs 28–32°C and the November-to-February months sit in the high twenties with warm evenings and sea breeze, so the problem is heat and sand rather than cold. One outfit per function, plus daywear and something for the beach, covers a three-day format.

The three-day format most of our couples living abroad use is mehendi or sangeet on the first evening, the ceremony on the second and the reception on the third — which is what makes four to five outfits the honest number. The mehendi runs on a lawn or by the pool in daylight and wants the lightest thing in the suitcase; the sangeet is an evening on a pool terrace and takes the dressiest. If any part of the ceremony is on sand, heels are the commonest mistake UK guests make — flats, wedges or bare feet, and a head covering for anyone attending a gurdwara ceremony.
