Quick Answer · Indian Wedding Cost in USD

An Indian wedding in India costs roughly $21,000–$63,000 for an intimate 50–150 guest celebration, $63,000–$260,000 for a mid-size 150–400 guest wedding, and $260,000 and upwards for a grand 400+ guest production. That is ₹20–60 lakh, ₹60 lakh–₹2.5 crore and ₹2.5 crore+ at ₹95.14 to the dollar, August 2026. Guest count moves the number more than anything else. Full tables in dollars, pounds and dirhams below.

The rate used on this page. ₹95.14 to the US dollar, ₹128.12 to the pound sterling and ₹25.90 to the UAE dirham, held as of August 2026 and refreshed with our quarterly cost index rather than pulled live. Every rupee figure below is already published on a Panigrahana page and linked where it appears; only the conversion is done here. Conversions are for orientation. We quote and contract in rupees, so the number you agree does not move with the exchange rate — you carry no currency risk on the contracted amount, only on when you choose to convert.

If you are earning abroad and pricing a wedding in India, the hard part is not the arithmetic. It is that almost every useful Indian cost page is written in lakhs and crores, and almost every dollar-denominated page is written by someone who has never booked an Indian venue. This page is the first set converted at a stated rate.

By guest count: city wedding vs destination

The single biggest split in Indian wedding budgeting. A city wedding assumes guests live locally and sleep at home. A destination wedding assumes a two or three night stay, and guest rooms then account for 50–65% of the budget. Same rupee figures, same source report.

Per plate: what catering costs a head

Catering is the largest single line on almost every Indian wedding, and it is quoted per plate (per cover). Multiply by guest count and by the number of functions you are feeding. Rates from the 2026 cost report; the Bangalore venue-by-venue detail is in our Bangalore venue cost guide.

Premium liquor, live counters and custom menus sit on top of these. So does a service charge and GST.

Venue rental or minimum guarantee: two different contracts

This is the mechanic that confuses almost every couple pricing from abroad, because it does not work the way a US or UK venue hire does. Indian venues bill one of two ways, and which one you are signing changes how guest count affects your money.

ModelWho uses itWhat you payWhat guest count does
Minimum guarantee
per-plate minimum spend
Five-star hotels and resort propertiesNo separate venue fee. You commit to a minimum food and beverage spend across all guests, quoted per plate. You are billed against the count you guaranteed, whether or not those guests turn up. Fall short and you still pay.
Day rental
flat fee for the property
Garden estates, heritage properties, standalone venuesA fixed rental for the space, with your own caterer hired separately. The Tamarind Tree, for example, is ₹16 lakh a day for all five spaces — about $17,000 (source).Venue cost is fixed regardless of headcount. Only the catering line moves.

The practical consequence: at a hotel, the guaranteed count is the most important number in your contract, and it is negotiable. Ask what the minimum is and what moves it before you argue about anything else. For guest counts under 500, a garden estate plus a good external caterer is usually 30–40% cheaper than a five-star hotel; the venue decision framework works through when each model wins.

Decor

Bands from the 2026 cost report. Our own decor engagements start at ₹75,000 for a single small setup; the figures below are full wedding programmes. The national breakdown by function sits on Indian wedding decoration cost.

The planning fee

Panigrahana charges a flat fee of ₹5–25 lakh and above, which is about $5,300–$26,000 (£3,900–£20,000 · AED 19,000–AED 97,000). It is a fixed fee set against a written scope, not a percentage of what you spend and not a commission taken from vendors. You pay vendors directly at their own rates. How the number is arrived at, and how other Indian planners charge, is on wedding planner charges in India.

A worked example: 150 guests, three days, Goa

The format most families abroad actually book. Figures from our Goa destination wedding cost breakdown, for 150 guests over three days at a premium four-star resort.

LineRupeesUS dollars
Venue hire and F&B minimum, three functions₹15–25 lakh$16,000–$26,000
Decor across three functions₹12–18 lakh$13,000–$19,000
All-in total₹50–80 lakh$53,000–$84,000

That works out at roughly ₹35,000–60,000 a guest, or $370–$630 a head, before flights and outfits. The same celebration at a luxury property such as Taj Exotica or The Leela runs ₹1.2–1.8 crore for 200 guests, which is $130,000–$190,000.

What is not in any of these numbers

Why the same money buys more here

Indian luxury weddings are priced in rupees against a local cost base: the venue, the catering kitchen, the floral market, the design and production team. When your income is earned in a stronger currency, the effective purchasing power on the ground is considerably higher than the same nominal figure would deliver at home. A ₹1 crore wedding — a 150-guest, three-day, five-star Goa beach celebration — converts to about $110,000. Few couples in the US or UK would call a six-figure wedding restrained; in India that number commissions the country's best hotels and a fully in-house design and production team.

We have not run a like-for-like study against US venue pricing, so we do not publish a percentage saving. The tables above are more useful anyway: take a quote you have been given at home and compare it line by line. The budgeting detail for families abroad, including how payments are staged, is in our wedding budget guide for couples living abroad.

Common questions

How much does an Indian wedding in India cost in USD?
Converted from our published rupee figures at August 2026 rates (₹95.14 to the dollar), an intimate 50–150 guest wedding runs about $21,000–$63,000, a mid-size 150–400 guest wedding $63,000–$260,000, and a grand 400+ guest production $260,000 and upwards. Per guest, budget roughly $420–$1,100 for a city wedding and $530–$1,300 for a multi-day destination wedding, before flights and outfits.
What is the average cost of an Indian wedding in India in US dollars?
There is no single average worth quoting, because the range is genuinely wide and driven by guest count more than anything else. The most useful figure is per guest. A 100-guest city wedding sits around $26,000–$58,000 all-in; the same 100 guests at a destination property over two or three nights runs $42,000–$84,000, because guest rooms are 50–65% of a destination budget.
Do we pay in dollars or rupees?
Rupees. We contract and invoice in INR, so the number you agree is fixed in rupees and does not move with the exchange rate. What moves is only the dollar amount you send to fund it, and you choose when to convert. A falling rupee makes your wedding cheaper in dollars; a strengthening rupee is capped to whatever you have already funded.
Is it cheaper to have an Indian wedding in India than in the US or UK?
For most families, yes, and the reason is structural rather than a discount. Indian venues, catering, floral, in-house design and production are all priced against a local cost base. When your income is earned in dollars or pounds, the same nominal budget commissions a considerably larger celebration on the ground. We have not run a like-for-like study against US venue pricing, so we do not publish a percentage — but the per-plate and venue tables on this page let you compare against a quote from home directly.
What is a per-plate minimum and how does it work in dollars?
At most five-star hotels there is no separate venue rental. Instead you commit to a minimum food and beverage spend across all guests, quoted per plate. Rates run about $21–$37 per plate at banquet and four-star level up to $58–$89 at palace properties. You are billed against the guaranteed count whether or not every guest attends, which is why the guaranteed number is the single most important figure in the contract.
What is not included in these figures?
International flights, outfits and jewellery, and anything your guests pay for themselves. GST and service charge add 12–18% on top of the totals shown. Season timing swings the price 15–25%, and a multi-day programme typically costs 2.6–3.2 times a single-day event.
