Indian Wedding Decoration Cost

Cost by function

Tiers are useful for setting a total. Functions are what you actually approve. Ranges below are national; the city pages carry the venue-specific detail.

Mandap

The mandap takes 25–30% of the decor budget, which is the most useful single ratio in Indian wedding decor. On a ₹15 lakh decor budget that is ₹3.75–4.5 lakh; on ₹30 lakh it is ₹7.5–9 lakh (source). Priced as a standalone element, our Kerala guide publishes a traditional mandapam at ₹50,000–₹1.5 lakh, a designed wooden mandapam at ₹1.5–4 lakh and a premium custom mandapam at ₹4–10 lakh and above.

At 500 guests every element has to grow by roughly three times what intuition suggests: the mandap apex reaches six to eight metres with a visual spread of eight to ten metres, and flanking floral columns need to be at least three metres tall to read at all (source).

Stage and reception backdrop

A simple fabric-and-minimal-floral treatment starts at ₹20,000. A quality mid-range backdrop — textured fabric base with well-designed floral accents — runs ₹80,000–₹2 lakh. A full floor-to-ceiling fresh floral installation for a premium reception stage is ₹2–₹5 lakh. LED video walls are priced separately as AV rental at ₹50,000–₹2 lakh (source).

One allocation note worth more than any number here. Couples routinely over-invest in the sangeet backdrop, where performance lighting renders most floral detail invisible, and under-invest in the reception backdrop, which is the most photographed stage in the wedding and is seen in natural ambient light. The priority order for backdrop spend is reception, then ceremony mandap, then sangeet, then mehendi.

Entrance

The most under-funded line in Indian wedding decor. A traditional South Indian torana of mango leaf and flowers is ₹8,000–₹20,000; a banana stem and marigold gateway ₹12,000–₹35,000; a mid-range floral arch with flanking columns and lighting ₹60,000–₹1.5 lakh; a grand floral portal arch at four metres tall and four wide ₹1.5–₹4 lakh (full list of 20 concepts with costs). A fairy light canopy at ₹20,000–₹60,000 has among the best cost-to-impact ratios in the whole category.

Haldi

₹80,000–₹4 lakh, and the band is identical in Bangalore and in Goa — the one function where the destination carries no premium. A home or small-venue haldi for 30–60 people sits at ₹80,000–₹1.2 lakh; a mid-scale venue setup ₹1.5–₹2.5 lakh; a full designer haldi with custom marigold walls and multiple zones ₹2.5–₹4 lakh.

A haldi budget should not look like a smaller reception. It works in daylight and it gets touched, so the money goes into ground protection, shade and activity counters rather than structural grandeur. Many families spend three to four times more on reception decor than on haldi, and the haldi often produces the better photographs.

Mehendi

A marigold wall is ₹25,000–₹60,000, a macrame backdrop three to four metres wide ₹30,000–₹70,000, and a palm leaf and floral treatment ₹18,000–₹45,000 (source).

Lighting

Quoted separately by most studios, and often missing from a decor quote that includes only string lights and uplighting. Basic ambient for a single function is ₹1.5–₹2.5 lakh; a professional single-function design with wash, spots, gobo and an operator through the event ₹3–₹5 lakh; a distinct design for each of three functions ₹5–₹8 lakh; a grand production with moving heads and multiple operators ₹10–₹20 lakh (source). A monogram gobo on the ballroom floor costs ₹25,000–₹40,000 and is one of the highest-impact per-rupee lines in the category.

What actually drives the number

Flower choice, and where the money really goes

Imported stems (king protea, garden roses, hydrangea, ranunculus, peonies) run roughly four to eight times their local equivalents. The blend that works is 20–30% imported accents in a predominantly local palette, which reads as luxury at a fraction of an all-imported budget. A second saving sits in material choice: real flowers where guests stand close, high-quality dried or artificial material for ceiling installations and backdrop accents, which cuts the floral line 30–40% with no visible quality loss (flower guide).

Climate decides more of the palette than taste does. Jasmine, marigold, chrysanthemum, orchid and anthurium hold through a humid coastal afternoon. Delicate imported blooms installed at noon for a six o’clock reception will not, whatever the reference image showed.

Seasonality, and the myth attached to it

This is the variable couples most consistently overestimate. Peak wedding dates carry roughly 15% higher flower costs, which moves a total decor budget by only about 5%. Flower rates track the festival calendar and daily market supply far more than they track the wedding calendar. What genuinely moves on a peak date is the venue line and the room block, not the decor.

Structure versus fabric

A structure is a cost decision before it is an aesthetic one. Fabric gives texture, depth and warmth without the logistics of a full floral installation. A six-metre wide, three-and-a-half metre tall floral wall carries real weight and needs a properly engineered steel frame rather than aluminium pipe, freestanding because venues rarely permit wall attachment, and tested before the day. That engineering, not the flowers on it, is most of the difference between two quotes for what looks like the same backdrop.

Venue restrictions

Five-star hotels commonly prohibit drilling, nailing or ceiling attachment, so every installation has to be freestanding and self-supporting, and many levy a surcharge on external decorators of around ₹25,000–₹1,00,000. Convention halls are blank canvases that need complete transformation and run roughly 20–30% more than an equivalent hotel setup. Garden venues need weather-proofing, independent power and ground protection. Access matters too: most installations need the venue 8–16 hours ahead, and a ceiling installation or floral tunnel needs overnight access, which not every venue grants. Confirm it at contract stage rather than at load-in.

Scale

Decor is one of the few wedding lines where scale does not buy efficiency. At ₹50 lakh for 500 guests you are spending ₹10,000 a head; at ₹15 lakh for 100 guests you are spending ₹15,000 a head and getting a more concentrated visual result. The infrastructure overhead at 500 guests — rigging crews, generators, eight to fifteen trucks, sixty to a hundred installers over three to five setup days — is the reason. More usefully still: spend follows the build, not the headcount. A 50-guest luxury wedding can cost more to decorate than a 100-guest mid-range one, because what you are paying for is how much has to be made.

What a decor quote should contain

• The flower list in writing — variety and source. Quoting imported stock and delivering local after booking is the classic margin move.
• Transport and logistics — routinely ₹15,000–₹50,000, and routinely absent from a first quote.
• Generator for outdoor venues — ₹10,000–₹25,000.
• Whether lighting design is included, or only string lights and uplighting.
• Teardown, overtime and damage deposits, each as its own line.
