Which visa do guests who are not Indian citizens need to attend a wedding in India?

The e-Tourist visa. India has no wedding visa category, and the e-Tourist visa’s own listed purposes include a casual visit to meet friends and relatives, which is exactly what attending a wedding is. Applications open 120 days before travel and close four days before arrival.

The official e-Visa portal lists “recreation, sight seeing, casual visit to meet friends and relatives” among the permitted purposes of the e-Tourist visa. Your guests apply for the same thing any holidaymaker applies for. Nobody needs a letter from the venue, and nothing on the form asks about a wedding.

What changes between guests is the sub-type and how early they apply. The portal prints these terms:

The e-Arrival card is separate and often missed. The portal states that foreigners and OCI card holders submit it online within 72 hours before arrival, and that it is “for arrival information, not a visa”. Both go into the guest note with the invitation, so nobody discovers either at the airport.

Do American guests need a visa for an Indian wedding?

Yes, unless they hold an OCI card. United States passport holders sit on the Government of India’s e-Visa eligibility list, so a guest flying from Chicago applies for exactly the same e-Tourist visa as one flying from London, Toronto, Sydney or Dubai.

The portal publishes a list of 175 eligible countries and territories, and every passport a guest list from abroad usually runs through is on it: the USA, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore and New Zealand. The passport decides it, not the address — a cousin living in Dubai on an Indian passport needs nothing, while their Australian-passport husband needs the e-Tourist visa.

The line that catches people out is the arrival point. The portal states that e-Visa holders “will be allowed to enter into India only through the designated international airports (36)”. Bengaluru, both Goa airports, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Calicut, Mangalore and Kannur are on it, so every airport we land guests at is covered — a clever connection into a smaller regional field is not. We read the final inbound leg before the room list closes, because a wrong last hop cannot be fixed at immigration.

Do OCI cardholders and British dual nationals need anything different?

OCI cardholders need no visa at all. GOV.UK states you must have a visa to visit India unless you are an Overseas Citizen of India cardholder, and that a valid OCI card with a valid British passport is enough. British-Pakistani dual nationals must apply for an Indian visa on their Pakistani passport.

GOV.UK’s India entry requirements also set the passport rule that catches most people out: an expiry date at least six months after the date of arrival, and at least two blank pages. A guest whose passport runs out five months after the wedding is a problem to find in month one of planning, not in the week of the sangeet.

OCI holders still file the e-Arrival card; the portal names them explicitly alongside foreigners. If a guest has renewed their passport since the OCI card was issued, ask them to confirm the re-issue position with the Indian mission for their region before flights are booked. It takes weeks rather than days when it bites.

Our own method: when the room list closes we collect a scan of each overseas guest’s passport bio page with their visa or OCI card, because hotels in India ask for exactly that at check-in, and a missing scan at 11pm is how a jet-lagged family ends up standing in a lobby.

Who pays for what when guests fly in for an Indian wedding?

The common pattern is that the hosts cover rooms, meals and ground transport across the wedding days, and guests pay their own flights. It is a custom rather than a rule, which is why it belongs in writing on the invitation rather than left to assumption.

What goes wrong is never the custom. It is the gap between it. A guest assumes the airport transfer is handled; the host assumed a taxi. So four lines go into the wedding website and the guest note, identical in both:

• Nights covered by the hosts — named dates, not “the wedding days”.
• Meals covered — which functions include a meal, and which evening guests are free.
• Transport — whether airport pickups are arranged, and the one number to message on landing.
• What guests book themselves — flights and any extra nights either side.

How many invited friends from abroad will actually come?

Plan on well under everyone. A British host writing in April 2026 about a four-day wedding in India had 34 British friends invited and expected at least 21 to travel. Build the room block on confirmed replies, never on the invitation count.

Attendance from abroad is not a percentage you can borrow from a domestic list, because the cost of saying yes is different. The same British family put their share of a four-day Indian wedding at about £8,000 including six return flights, before outfits. And for anyone with school-age children a term-time date carries a legal cost in England: GOV.UK states a local council can fine each parent £80, rising to £160 if unpaid within 21 days, each parent limited to two fines for the same child in three years.

Three habits do more for your numbers than any invitation design. Send the date before the invitation — a save-the-date twelve months out is what lets a family in Sydney or Toronto book leave. Ask for a reply per function, because a guest who has flown eight thousand miles usually attends everything while a local guest may come to one. And treat every reply as provisional until the room is confirmed.

Can guests pay for their own rooms, or must the hosts guarantee a block?

Both arrangements exist. A block where guests pay their own rooms still leaves commitments with the hosts: a minimum number of rooms, a release date and sometimes a food and beverage minimum. Read what you are guaranteeing before the booking code is circulated.

“Guests pay their own rooms” is a billing arrangement, not an absence of risk. For guests flying in, the block usually starts a night earlier than for local guests. A red-eye landing at 3am needs a room that night, not from the following afternoon, and that one extra night multiplied across the overseas contingent is the most common miss in a first room plan. When should guests flying from the US, Canada or the UK book a December wedding trip?

As soon as the muhurtham is fixed. In South India the December window is short, because Dhanurmas closes wedding dates from 16 December to 14 January, so a large share of the season’s weddings and the flights carrying their guests land in the same fortnight.

That calendar fact is why December behaves as it does. Families abroad want the Christmas and New Year break because it is the one stretch when work leave and school holidays line up; the auspicious calendar closes on 16 December; so everybody competes for the same first fortnight. Venues in that window go early, and so do the seats.

What we do about it is sequence the announcement. The date, the hotel with its booking code and the arrival guidance go out together in one message, because guests who receive the date alone wait for the rest and book late.
