What does a Kerala wedding cost in 2026?

Five bands cover almost every Kerala wedding we are asked to price: ₹10–20 lakh at a hall or tharavadu, ₹30–60 lakh for 150–200 guests at a four-star resort, ₹45–80 lakh for 100 guests over two days on the backwaters, ₹41–89 lakh for 50 guests at a luxury property, and ₹60 lakh–1.3 crore for 150 guests at a flagship five-star.

Bands are as published in our scenario tables and cover venue or food-and-beverage commitment, rooms, catering, decor, photography, entertainment, guest logistics, outfits and a 10% contingency. Gold sits outside them. Hotel and catering invoices carry 18% GST and most hotels add a service charge of 10–18%, so check whether a venue quote is inclusive before you set it against these bands. What does it cost for 100, 250, 400 and 500 guests?

Multiply the per-head lines and hold the rest. Catering is the only line that scales one-for-one with guests: at ₹400–800 a leaf, a sadya for 500 costs ₹2–4 lakh; at a resort's ₹2,500–3,500 a plate over three services, 500 guests cost ₹37.5–52.5 lakh; at a five-star's ₹4,500–8,500 a plate, ₹67.5 lakh–1.28 crore.

The base is the 100-guest, two-day, mid-range scenario we have published since July: food-and-beverage commitment ₹8–15 lakh, 30–35 rooms for two nights at ₹8,000–12,000 (₹5–8 lakh), catering at ₹2,500–3,500 a plate across three services (₹7–10 lakh), traditional decor ₹8–12 lakh, photography and film ₹3–6 lakh, a Kathakali or Mohiniyattam performance ₹1–2 lakh, guest logistics ₹2–4 lakh, outfits ₹2–8 lakh and a 10% contingency, for a total of ₹45–80 lakh. Everything below is that table multiplied, never a new number.

Catering by guest count (one line, before GST)

Sadya and per-plate bands are from our Kerala sadya and catering guide; the five-star bands are the venue rate bands on our Kerala venues page, indicative and taxes extra. A resort kitchen serving the sadya in-house prices it at ₹1,800–3,500 a leaf, so the post-muhurtham lunch at a resort is ₹4.5–8.75 lakh for 250 and ₹9–17.5 lakh for 500.

The lines that do not scale with heads

• Rooms follow travelling guests, not the invitation list. Per 100 guests who need beds: 30–35 rooms for two nights at ₹8,000–12,000 is ₹5–8 lakh. A 400-guest Kerala wedding is usually mostly local, so count the families flying in, not the hall.
• Decor prices the spaces, not the seats. At a hall, a temple-style mandapam with nilavilakku, banana trunks and jasmine is ₹50,000–1.5 lakh and a reception stage ₹50,000–2.5 lakh. At a resort, traditional Kerala decor across all functions is ₹8–12 lakh and a contemporary architectural build ₹15–25 lakh, whether 100 or 400 people sit in front of it.
• Photography (₹3–6 lakh), a classical performance (₹1–2 lakh) and a day-of coordinator (from ₹75,000) are fixed per wedding. Wedding planning fees are quoted for the agreed scope.

Who can seat 400 or 500, and what the buyout route costs

Capacity decides the tier before price does. For 250, most resorts work: Taj Bekal lists 10–500 guests, Fragrant Nature in Kollam 50–500, Kumarakom Lake Resort up to 2,000. For 400–500 the list shortens to The Leela Kovalam (100–900, 188 rooms), Kumarakom Lake Resort (65 rooms), Radisson Blu Kochi (100–1,200) and convention hotels such as Gokulam Park Kochi (200–2,500). The buyout route is priced as a day rate: Taj Bekal's own listing carries ₹55 lakh per day for 77 rooms including three meals and the venue, so two days is ₹1.1 crore before decor, photography and tax; Gateway Bekal lists ₹35 lakh per day for 100 rooms, ₹70 lakh for two days, for 104–1,200 guests. On the auditorium route, Al Saj Convention Centre in Trivandrum lists a ₹2.95 lakh rental with catering from ₹350 a plate for 50–3,200 guests, and Lulu International Convention Center in Thrissur ₹2,000 a plate for 350–1,500 (WedMeGood-listed, taxes extra).

What did other Malayali families report spending?

Public r/Kerala threads put real weddings between ₹5–6 lakh (an air-conditioned auditorium and sadya for 250–400 guests, self-funded) and ₹28–30 lakh (Crowne Plaza Kochi, end to end). Those sit inside our hall band and just under our resort band. The outliers people complain about are decor quotes, not food.

We read these as demand, not as quotes: the figures are what the people posting reported, and we have not verified them.

• The most-read thread (527 upvotes, 327 comments, January 2024) asked the average for about 400 guests in south Kerala; the one hard number offered was ₹28–30 lakh for a Crowne Plaza Kochi wedding end to end.
• A 2022 thread collected costs by category: a 2015 wedding at about ₹5 lakh, of which jewellery was ₹2.2 lakh, food and event ₹1.6 lakh and outfits ₹60,000, and lockdown-era weddings under ₹2 lakh.
• A 2023 poster was quoted ₹10–13 lakh for decor alone for 250 guests plus ₹2.25 lakh for a two-day shoot and asked whether that was fair; replies said it was far over, and put food at ₹500–1,000 a head.
• A self-funded couple did 250–400 guests for ₹5–6 lakh with an air-conditioned auditorium and sadya; replies quoted a Pathanamthitta sadya near ₹250 a leaf and an AC hall under ₹1.5 lakh, and advised checking that the auditorium package covers chairs, tables, cleaning, waste and generator.
• A couple planning 50–70 guests near Kochi under ₹30 lakh reported five-star rooms at ₹22,000 plus 18% in Kochi and ₹45,000 plus 18% in Kovalam, and a ₹20 lakh quote for decor, entertainment and photography together.
• A 60-guest backwater couple found themselves ₹7 lakh over budget on food rates and venue charges and asked what was negotiable. Nobody answered them. That answer is two sections down.

Set against our bands: the ₹10–13 lakh decor quote is our resort-tier decor line (₹8–12 lakh) being offered for a hall wedding where mandapam and stage together should be ₹1–4 lakh. None of the reported totals contradicts the table at the top.

What is the same total in dirhams, dollars and pounds?

At ₹25.90 per dirham, ₹95.14 per dollar and ₹128.12 per pound (August 2026), a ₹45–80 lakh resort wedding is AED 174,000–309,000, $47,300–84,100 or £35,100–62,400, a ₹10–20 lakh hall wedding is AED 39,000–77,000, $10,500–21,000 or £7,800–15,600, and a ₹60 lakh–1.3 crore flagship five-star wedding is AED 232,000–502,000, $63,100–136,600 or £46,800–101,500.

The per-head figures are the ones worth memorising, because they are what you will be negotiating over the phone with a caterer or a banquet manager.

We hold the rate constant on the page so a quote does not appear to move between two visits. Venue contracts are in rupees; the exchange difference between the day you approve and the day you pay is yours, which is one reason we stage payments rather than front-load them. Which lines are specific to Kerala?

Four lines behave differently here: catering is priced per leaf and starts at ₹400; halls sell a package rather than a rental plus a minimum; gold is budgeted in sovereigns and kept outside the wedding total; and a church wedding adds a catered reception day rather than a costlier rite.

• Sadya per leaf. ₹400–800 for a standard 26-dish sadya from an established caterer, ₹900–1,500 for a premium 36-dish menu with several payasams, ₹1,800–3,500 when a luxury resort kitchen serves it, and ₹2,500–5,000 a head for a resort cocktail dinner with live stations. Ask what is on the leaf before you compare two rates; the dish count, not the caterer's name, is the price.
• The auditorium package. Kerala halls are listed as a rental (Linus Auditorium in Thrissur ₹35,000; Al Saj ₹2.95 lakh) or as a per-plate package (Ananthapuri Auditorium ₹400 a plate; KRK Kalyana Mandapam in Palakkad ₹300 veg), WedMeGood-listed and taxes extra. Get the inclusions in writing: chairs, tables, cleaning, waste, generator, and the hours.
• Gold, in sovereigns, outside the budget. One sovereign (pavan) is 8 grams; on 30 August 2026, 22-carat gold in Kerala was listed at about ₹14,500 a gram on GoodReturns, so a sovereign is near ₹1.16 lakh, 10 sovereigns about ₹11.6 lakh and 25 about ₹29 lakh (indicative; the rate moves daily). The number is a family choice with no required figure, which is why gold is its own line and never inside our estimates unless a family asks us to track it. Heirloom pieces reworked by a goldsmith cost making charges only, typically 8–15% of the gold value.
• Church versus temple. A Christian wedding for 150–200 guests over two days is ₹40–60 lakh (industry average); a hall or hotel reception with full sadya for 400–600 guests runs ₹25–45 lakh. A one-day muhurtham wedding with a sadya lunch for about 300 local guests is ₹10–20 lakh. The gap is the second catered service and the reception venue, not the ceremony. How much of a backwater resort quote is rooms, and why are five-star rooms ₹20,000-plus?

About a tenth at a mid-range backwater resort and about a quarter at a luxury one: ₹5–8 lakh of ₹45–80 lakh for 30–35 rooms over two nights, against ₹10–25 lakh of ₹41–89 lakh when a resort buyout, villas at ₹20,000–45,000 a night, is the venue.

Three things make the room line what it is. First, inventory: Taj Kumarakom has 26 rooms, CGH Earth Coconut Lagoon 52, Kumarakom Lake Resort 65 (rooms ₹15,000–60,000 a night), Taj Bekal 66. With inventories that size a wedding is effectively a buyout, so the room block is the venue fee wearing a different name, and the property prices it accordingly. Second, season: the wedding months are October to March with December and January the strongest, and blocks are contracted at season rates. Third, tax: hotel invoices carry 18% GST and most hotels add a service charge of 10–18%, which is how a ₹20,000 room appears on the settlement at ₹23,600 before service. What we do about it: put only the guests who need beds in the block, take a two-night minimum only where the programme needs it, and hold overflow rooms at a nearby second hotel. The 100-guest backwater wedding plan and the Kumarakom Lake Resort page show how the block is built.

What is negotiable in a resort quote?

Ask about structure, not discounts. The children's plate rate and its age cut-off, complimentary rooms per block, whether the welcome dinner counts toward the minimum, second-day menu pricing, outside-decor access and the damage deposit, corkage, service charge shown separately, and how payments are staged. GST at 18% is not negotiable.

Every one of these goes into the contract in writing, because the first quote from a Kerala resort is a rate card, not a wedding:

• Children. A reduced kids' plate against the adult rate, and the age at which it stops, written in.
• The minimum. Which services count toward the food-and-beverage commitment. A welcome dinner and a post-muhurtham sadya that both count will usually clear it without a shortfall charge.
• Day two. The second day mostly repeats catering for the same list; ask for the repeat menu to be priced as a repeat, and for a fresh setting rather than a fresh build.
• Rooms. Complimentary rooms per block, early check-in for the bride's family, late check-out on departure day, and whether unsold block rooms are released without penalty by a named date.
• Decor and vendors. Access hours for our team, the damage deposit amount and its return date, and confirmation that no surcharge applies to outside decor or photography.
• Bar and music. Corkage per bottle if you bring stock, and a proforma invoice, naming the collecting body, for any licence fee raised after the advance is paid.
• Money. Service charge as a separate line, GST shown on every invoice, and the payment stages: an advance to hold the date, an instalment as the month approaches, settlement against final numbers.

What does a two-day Christian wedding cost against a one-day Hindu muhurtham wedding?

The rite does not set the price; the number of catered services and the venue tier do. A one-day muhurtham at a hall for about 300 guests is ₹10–20 lakh. A two-day church wedding with a hotel reception for 150–200 guests is ₹40–60 lakh (industry average); at a hall-tier reception for 400–600 guests, ₹25–45 lakh.

Run the arithmetic and the difference explains itself. One sadya service for 300 at ₹400–800 is ₹1.2–2.4 lakh. Add a reception dinner the evening before and the food line doubles; move that reception into a Kochi hotel at ₹2,500–4,500 a plate and it multiplies again. The church itself is a small line in either tradition. A Hindu wedding becomes a two-day wedding the moment there is a reception or a resort stay, and then it prices like one: that is the ₹45–80 lakh scenario. How do families in the Gulf fund and approve a Kerala wedding at each band?

We quote in rupees with dirhams, dollars or pounds alongside at one fixed rate, the venue contract stays in rupees, and approvals happen in our couple portal wherever you live. Money moves from an NRE or NRO account: RBI allows an NRO account to be debited for local payments, and a resident power-of-attorney holder to operate an NRE account.

• Hall band, ₹10–20 lakh (AED 39,000–77,000). Usually funded by the family in Kerala with one or two transfers from abroad; the caterer and hall are paid locally, often by a parent holding power of attorney on the account. One approval call, one shared budget sheet.
• Resort band, ₹45–80 lakh (AED 174,000–309,000). Payments are staged with the venue: advance, instalment, settlement against final numbers. Each stage is approved in the portal against the budget line it belongs to, so the family in Kerala and the couple in Dubai or Doha sign off the same number at the same time.
• Flagship band, ₹60 lakh–1.3 crore (AED 232,000–502,000). The same staging with a larger advance, and a currency plan: we tell you the rupee total and the dates it falls due, and you decide when to convert. UAE residents can also pay Indian vendors by UPI from a UPI-linked NRE or NRO account registered to a UAE mobile number.
