The mandap is the most photographed element of any Indian wedding. Every processional image, every ritual photograph, every family portrait — they all include it. Getting the mandap right is not optional. After designing mandaps for over 500 weddings across Bangalore and beyond, here are the fifteen concepts we return to — and the insight behind why each one works. The mandap is the centrepiece of every Hindu ceremony — read our complete South Indian Hindu wedding ceremony guide for the ritual context; for how the mandap sits within the full multi-day programme, our multi-day Hindu wedding planning guide.
Quick Answer · The Mandap
In Bangalore, a mandap costs ₹1.5–2 lakh basic fabric-draped, ₹3–5 lakh as a structured floral build, and ₹6–10 lakh custom-designed. The mandap is the ceremonial platform the wedding happens on — the one structure every camera faces for the entire ceremony. Fifteen concepts matched to Bangalore venues are below.
The 15 Mandap Design Concepts
What goes wrong at a mandap build — from our own productions
- Venues quote load-in in hours; a custom mandap needs a build window measured in days. The gap between the two is negotiated at booking or paid for in overtime crews.
- Large structures need vehicle and sometimes crane access to the lawn — a design approved without a site access check is a design that gets rebuilt smaller.
- A mandap built the night before needs overnight security; wind, sprinklers and early-morning venue traffic have all rearranged unwatched builds.

The couple who did not want a mandap
Minole and Mir had sat in front of enough four-pillar mandaps to know they did not want one. The version we built for them at Mukta Hall has no pillars because it never touches the ground: the lotus canopy is rigged to the ceiling, and the couple stood on a platform cut in the shape of a lotus underneath it. In the photographs there is no structure around them at all.
If the four-pillar shape is not what you want either, raise it early. Suspending a canopy is a rigging question before it is a design question, and it needs confirmed ceiling load points from the venue. Check that before you fall in love with a drawing, not after.

Choosing Mandap Style by Venue Type

Garden Venues (Taj West End, Leela Palace Lawns, Golfshire)
The venue itself is the backdrop. Choose a mandap that works with the landscape — botanical, tropical, heritage, or traditional. Avoid overly urban or contemporary minimalist concepts outdoors; they fight the natural setting rather than working with it. Overhead lighting is essential for evening garden mandaps — your mandap must be visible after dark.
Ballrooms (Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, Sheraton, JW Marriott)
The venue offers controlled light and architectural grandeur. White and gold, glass and crystal, or the grand floral dome all work exceptionally well. The ballroom ceiling — if it has chandeliers — should be a design partner, not an afterthought.
Heritage Settings
Let the architecture speak. A heritage mandap or Rajasthani-inspired concept sits most naturally in a palace or high-ceiling colonial space. Minimal, contemporary mandaps can also work in heritage settings as a contrast — but they require very confident art direction.
What Makes a Mandap Photograph Well
The most important factor is negative space — a clear, uncluttered background that allows the mandap to read cleanly. Second is height: a mandap with vertical presence creates depth in photographs. Third is consistent lighting from above (not harsh front-on flashes, but soft overhead spots that wrap the couple in warm light). Finally, the floor treatment — a rug, a stone platform, or a floral carpet — anchors the composition.
A related habit that improves every mandap conversation: name things. Not "pastel florals" but sage and ivory with tuberose along the canopy line. Not "a traditional look" but a cane frame, brass urns at the pillar bases, and mogra strings hung at eye level where guests will actually smell them. Terracotta-and-rust, monochrome white, marigold on mango-leaf green — a named palette gives the design team something precise to build and gives you something to hold them to. The same applies to materials: cane and raw wood read warm in daylight venues, brass and mirror carry evening light. When a proposal says "premium flowers" without naming a single stem, ask for the names.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cost of a mandap in Bangalore?
Mandap costs in Bangalore range from ₹1.5–2L for a basic fabric-draped arch, ₹3–5L for a structured floral mandap with local flowers, ₹6–10L for a custom design with imported florals and original structural treatment, and ₹15L+ for a fully bespoke architectural creation.
Which mandap style photographs best?
Mandaps with vertical height and a clear negative-space background photograph best. A four-pillar mandap against a clean lawn or neutral wall, with warm overhead lighting, consistently produces the most striking ceremony photographs. The floral dome and traditional South Indian mandaps are perennially excellent for photography.
How do I choose a mandap style for a hotel ballroom?
For hotel ballrooms, lean into the architecture. A glass-and-crystal or white-and-gold mandap works beautifully in the Ritz-Carlton or Four Seasons. For garden venues like Taj West End, a botanical or organic mandap with natural materials mirrors the environment and photographs far better than a concept designed for indoor use.
Do you use fresh or artificial flowers in mandap decor?
Both, and the choice is structural rather than cosmetic. Fresh flowers go wherever guests get close — garlands, the canopy edge, the aisle, anything photographed at arm's length — because mogra, tuberose, and marigold bring fragrance and texture no substitute matches. Handmade fabric or dried elements are used where weight, heat, or rigging rules out fresh stems, such as large suspended canopies that hang overhead for a full day. Our itemised quotes state which is which for every element, so you know exactly what you are paying for.
How long does it take to build a mandap?
A standard structural mandap with florals requires 6–8 hours to build on-site. A complex floral dome or multi-tier mandap may require 12–16 hours and overnight setup access to the venue. Always confirm venue access timing with your decor team before signing the contract.
