The most consistent sangeet stage failure we encounter is the disconnect between the performance brief and the stage design. A family books a choreographer for fifteen people and a live dhol player for the processional — and then commissions a stage that is 20 feet wide with a backdrop that visually competes with the performers. The performers get lost. The stage needs to be scaled to the performance, not to the room. A 12-foot-wide stage with a clean, high-contrast backdrop does more for a live performance than a sprawling platform with a visually busy design.
