On an exposed ridge, where weather arrives quickly, the call has to be made earlier than anyone wants to make it.

The rain plan we insist on

Identify the covered alternative at site-visit stage, before the property is booked. If there isn't one and none can be built, that is information about the property, not a detail to settle later.
Cost the covered version as part of the budget from the start. A rain plan that is a surprise invoice is a rain plan that gets argued about on the day.
Agree the decision time in advance — a fixed hour before the ceremony at which the call is made, and who makes it. Usually that is us, with the family's prior agreement.
Design the covered version so it is not a lesser wedding. Guests should not be able to tell it was the second plan.
Protect the build overnight against dew and wind, not just against rain during the function.
Plan guest movement for wet conditions too: where vehicles drop, how guests get from vehicle to cover without crossing open ground, and where wet footwear goes.

The honest version: we would rather design a covered or semi-covered ceremony that looks intentional than a fully open one that depends on the sky. On a ridge, that is not pessimism. It is the difference between a plan and a hope.

The hill gives you two things city venues cannot: an open horizon and genuinely dramatic light at the start and end of the day. Both are time-limited, and both are hostage to cloud. A running order built around them, with a fallback, is what makes the photographs worth the drive.

How we schedule a hilltop day

Put anything that depends on the horizon early or late, and accept that the window is short. Do not schedule three things into the same twenty minutes of light.

Build in a holding activity for early arrivals — tea, a shaded or sheltered space, something to do. On a hill there is nowhere else for them to go.
