For a wedding it has two outdoor spaces that matter: the Tennis Court, a semi-open court of 512 sq m listed for 502 theatre-style, and the Poolside Lawns, 374 sq m over the pool and the sea for up to 250. The hotel has traded as The Gateway Hotel Varkala and as Gateway Varkala, IHCL SeleQtions, and the SeleQtions factsheet still calls the court The Pandal and gives it 350 guests. Cvent's chart puts the same space at 7,169 sq ft with 250 at banquet rounds. We plan to 250 seated at tables and treat the larger figures as standing numbers.

Two listing policies help both the design and the budget: outside decorators are permitted, and so is outside alcohol. The constraint is rooms. Thirty keys house the two families and little else, so a Varkala wedding here is a hotel for the core group plus a block at the other cliff hotels, with transfers in between.

Designed, not just planned

How we would design a wedding at Gateway Varkala (IHCL)

The cliff gives you the sunset and the sea for free, so a ceremony on the Poolside Lawns should face west and be timed to the sun. The Tennis Court is the opposite problem: a fenced, flat rectangle that has to be turned into a room. We would do that with a fabric ceiling, a floor and warm perimeter light, not with a wall of florals. Wind off the sea moves anything tall, which means low mandaps and weighted structures. Varkala's own colours (red cliff, black rock, coconut green) work better as a palette than pastels.

Season and weather

November to March is the dry season on the Varkala cliff, with calm seas in the evenings. From June to September the southwest monsoon hits this coast hard; the Tennis Court is semi-open and the lawns are uncovered, so a monsoon date needs a full tented plan. Peak December dates go early.

Arrivals, access and logistics

Trivandrum International Airport is about 55 km, a 75 to 90 minute drive (Gateway). Varkala Sivagiri railway station is in town. The hotel is on the northern cliff near the Janardhana Swamy Temple. Plan shuttles between the hotel and the other cliff properties housing guests, with pick-up times printed on the itinerary.

Is Gateway Varkala the right venue for your wedding?

Right for you if	Couples planning a sea-facing wedding of 100 to 250 who want an IHCL hotel for the families and are happy to put the rest of the guest list in nearby cliff hotels.
Look elsewhere if	A wedding that needs more than 30 rooms on one site, or a covered, air-conditioned banquet for more than 40. Gateway Varkala has neither.
Planner tip	Book the room block before you sign the venue. With 30 keys, the hotel's own rooms go to the two families, and the rest of the guest list needs a block at other cliff hotels on the same dates. Then ask for the corkage figure in writing, since the listing permits outside alcohol but says nothing about the charge.
