Poovar Island Resort is the floating-cottage resort at Pozhiyoor, south of Thiruvananthapuram, where the backwater meets the Arabian Sea. It is about 30 km from Trivandrum International Airport and every guest arrives by boat. The resort publishes its wedding package: ₹2,000 to ₹2,300 a guest plus tax, with a 100-guest minimum, a Reception Lawn for 500 and 86 cottages, 16 of them floating.

The design problem is the water. Every chair, flower and speaker crosses from the Poovar jetty, and the resort charges hook-up and cargo overheads for outside entertainment. We would build the decor so it travels flat and assembles on the lawn, and schedule the guest boats as tightly as the ceremony.

Designed, not just planned

How we would design a wedding at Poovar Island Resort

Water on three sides decides the design. The mandap on the Backwater View Lawn should stay low and open so the backwater stays in every photograph, and structures have to be light enough to come across by boat. Lighting matters more than florals here: the lawns face water, and after dark the edge needs light for safety as much as for the look. For a Malayali ceremony we would lean into the setting (banana leaf, coconut frond, brass lamps) rather than import a North Indian stage.

Which function goes where

Mehendi	The Poolside Gardens or the conference hall if the afternoon turns wet.
