Wedding venues in Alleppey: Punnamada lake, Marari beach and what each can hold
Alleppey (Alappuzha) offers two kinds of wedding venue: lake resorts on the Punnamada backwater, home of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, and beach resorts at Marari on the edge of town. The largest published space is Ramada by Wyndham Alleppey's poolside arena, 12,000 sq ft for up to 1,500 guests. Marari Beach Resort's two largest lawns take 300 each.
Rooms are the limit, as everywhere on the backwaters: 125 at Ramada, 44 at Punnamada Resort including four floating cottages and four houseboats, 13 at Seclude Marari Sands. Marari Beach Resort is 1 hour 50 minutes from Cochin International Airport on CGH Earth's own page. Panigrahana is a wedding planning and design studio, not one of these resorts. Lake or beach: the two Alleppeys
Alleppey is the older name for Alappuzha, the town and the district, and an Alleppey wedding can mean one of two places. The first is the backwater: the Punnamada lake resorts, the canals, and Muhamma on the Alappuzha side of Vembanad Lake, half an hour by boat from Kumarakom. The second is the sea: Marari beach on the outskirts of town, where the resorts are cottages set in coconut groves.
The two give very different weddings. Punnamada gives you the houseboats, a lake view and, at Ramada, one hotel large enough for a big reception. Marari gives you a beach ceremony at a small resort, with a guest list to match.

Four Alleppey properties publish enough to compare: two on Punnamada and two at Marari. Other Alleppey resorts take weddings too; we have not verified their figures, so they are not in this table.

On the Kerala Tourism wedding register, Ramada lists itself as a five-star hotel and Punnamada as four-star. The Seclude package is the only all-in price any of the four publishes; it is priced for 39 guests, which tells you the size of wedding the property is set up for.

Which one for which wedding
- A reception of 500 to 1,500 on the backwater: Ramada's poolside arena is the only published Alleppey space at that size, and its 125 rooms are the largest block on this list.
- A lake wedding of 200 to 700 with houseboats in the plan: Punnamada Resort, whose own inventory includes four houseboats and four floating cottages.
- A beach wedding of up to 300: Marari Beach Resort, on the coconut grove or the poolside lawns, with the clubhouse garden for a smaller function.
- A wedding of about 40 people who all stay together: Seclude Marari Sands, on its published package.
If more than about 90 guests need rooms, Ramada is the only venue on this list with enough of them: 125 rooms sleep about 250 at two to a room. Otherwise plan a second hotel, or keep the family nights at the resort and hold the big reception elsewhere.
Where houseboats fit in
If you are picturing a houseboat, here is where it fits. A houseboat works well for part of a wedding: the bride's arrival, a small ceremony for close family, a sunset cruise the evening before. Boats stop for wind as well as rain. Anything on the water needs a land version that has been planned, not improvised.
Alleppey or Kumarakom?
Both sit on Vembanad Lake, which Kerala Tourism measures at about 60 km from the Thanneermukkam bund to Alappuzha. Kumarakom, on the eastern shore, is a belt of resorts often taken for a wedding as a whole property, with big lakefront lawns at Kumarakom Lake Resort, Backwater Ripples and Lakesong. Alleppey has the town, the houseboats, one large hotel at Ramada and the beach at Marari.
Pick Kumarakom for a lake wedding at one resort. Pick Alleppey if the houseboats or the beach are part of the idea, or if you need Ramada's hall size in a backwater town.
Season and the rain plan
Kerala gets two monsoons, and both the lake lawns and the Marari groves are open-air. At Punnamada the published halls take 70 and 85, theatre style. Marari Beach Resort's wedding page lists a clubhouse and garden for 200 alongside two lawns; ask how much of it is under a roof. Ramada's Vembanad hall takes up to 400 theatre style, and it is worth asking whether its poolside arena is covered. Where the covered space cannot hold everyone, a built cover and its cost belong in the plan.
Punnamada is home to the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. If your dates are near race day, ask the resorts how race day affects access and rooms before you fix anything.

Can we have a wedding on a houseboat in Alleppey?
For part of it. A houseboat suits a small ceremony for close family, the bride's arrival or a cruise the evening before, not a full guest list. Punnamada Resort includes four houseboats in its own inventory. Keep a land version of anything planned on the water, because boats stop for wind as well as rain.

Ramada by Wyndham Alleppey, with 125 rooms on its Kerala Tourism register entry. Punnamada Resort has 44, including four floating cottages and four houseboats, and Seclude Marari Sands has 13. Marari Beach Resort does not print a room count on the pages we checked.
How far is Alleppey from Kochi airport?
CGH Earth puts Marari Beach Resort at 1 hour 50 minutes from Cochin International Airport, and Seclude Marari Sands describes itself as about 1.5 hours from Kochi. For Punnamada and the town, ask the resort for the transfer time on your date.
Is Alleppey or Kumarakom better for a backwater wedding?
Kumarakom suits a lake wedding at one resort with a large lawn. Alleppey suits a wedding with houseboats in it, a beach ceremony at Marari, or a big reception in Ramada's 1,500-guest arena. Both are on Vembanad Lake, half an hour apart by boat between Kumarakom and Muhamma.
Can we have a beach wedding near Alleppey?
Yes, at Marari, on the outskirts of the town. Marari Beach Resort lists a coconut grove by the beach and poolside lawns for 300 each and a clubhouse garden for 200. Seclude Marari Sands is a 13-room property with beach access, sold as a package for 39 guests.
