Sumatra is the rare Bengaluru venue that reads as a destination without asking anyone to drive to one. It sits off Raghavana Palya Main Road in JP Nagar 9th Phase, ten minutes from Jayanagar and twenty from Banashankari, and the moment you are through the gate the city stops being visible. The property is built as a sequence of Indonesian-inspired outdoor rooms rather than one big lawn with a hall attached: stone walkways under trained creepers, a courtyard behind arches, a thatched pavilion, two villas around a reflecting pool, and then Asri — the grand lawn, palms along both edges, water down one side.
That structure is the reason to book it and the thing to plan around. Six settings of very different sizes means a three-day wedding can give each function its own room and never tear anything down: haldi in Rumput at ten, mehendi under Hutan's bamboo frame, sangeet on Palem, the muhurtham on Asri by the water, dinner served out of Berhawa. It also means the ceiling is 900 guests on paper and considerably less than that seated with a stage, a dance floor and service aisles. Sumatra rewards a guest list of roughly 150 to 450 more than it rewards a thousand-name list.
Commercially it is a rental venue with open catering — the model most South Bengaluru families actually want, because the two largest numbers in the budget move independently and you keep the cook you trust. What it does not have is a banquet hall, and that is the single planning fact everything else follows from. The covered fallback is Berhawa at roughly 160 covers. Any function larger than that planned outdoors needs a weather structure specified, priced and agreed at contract stage, not discussed in October.
- Six distinct outdoor settings on one small property — Asri lawn (900), Palem palm lawn (300), Berhawa pavilion (160), Rumput courtyard (100), Hutan pavilion (60) and the Roomah villas
- Asri, the main lawn, runs a water body along one edge — the mandap setting the venue is known for
- Berhawa is an open-sided pavilion on steel trusses with built-in kitchens and restrooms, so the caterer works on site
- Two Bali-styled villas plus a standalone room sleep up to 18, doubling as the getting-ready suites
- Outside catering — you bring your own cook, which suits community and sattvic menus
- 150 cars on site with valet, inside JP Nagar 9th Phase rather than on a highway

Every function needs its own room
Function spaces at Sumatra
| Space | Type | Seated | Floating | Air-conditioned | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asri — The Grand Lawn | lawn | — | 900 | No | The main event space: a sweeping open lawn framed by mature royal palms and rain trees, with a water body along one edge that the venue and couples use as the mandap setting. Venue states capacity 'up to 900 guests'. Source: sumatraweddings.com, checked 2026-09-11. |
| Palem — Palm Grove Lawn | lawn | — | 300 | No | Secondary lawn set among tall palms; the venue positions it for cocktails, sangeet and pre-functions, standalone or as an overflow extension to Asri. Up to 300 guests per the venue's own site. |
| Berhawa — The Banquet Pavilion | hall | 160 | — | No | Open-sided pavilion under a low bamboo-slat roof carried on dark steel trusses and timber posts, with built-in kitchens and restrooms in the adjoining rendered service block. The venue describes it as seating up to 160 and suited to dining, ceremonies or any function that needs cover but not air-conditioning. This is the only roofed dining space on the property and therefore the practical weather fallback to size your rain plan against — and its steel trusses are the strongest rigging point at Sumatra. |
| Rumput — Hidden Courtyard | terrace | — | 100 | No | Enclosed courtyard behind stone arches and planting; up to 100 guests. The venue positions it for haldi, mehendi and close-knit gatherings. |
| Hutan — Cocktail Pavilion | terrace | — | 60 | No | Open-frame pavilion with bamboo creepers trained overhead, around 60 guests. Designed as a blank canvas for florals and lighting; used for cocktails, performances and small functions. |
| Roomah — Bali-inspired Villas | hall | — | — | — | Two private Balinese-styled villas plus one standalone room. The venue states they sleep up to 18 guests with extra beds (the spaces page quotes up to 16 for the two villas alone), and they double as the bride's and groom's getting-ready suites. The villas can also be booked independently for short stays, directly or through Airbnb. |

What it actually costs
Sumatra wedding cost evidence
No verified price is published for Sumatra in this record, and we will not print an invented one. Start with a written venue quote, then add food, rooms, decor and production as separate lines — we can help you compare the inclusions once you have a date and a guest count.
Sumatra does not publish a tariff. Its WedMeGood listing shows 'Price on Request' with taxes extra, and the venue quotes per date. The commercial model is a property/day rental with catering contracted separately, which is what makes the two big budget lines move independently here.
No in-house catering rate: the venue's own site and its WedMeGood listing both describe outside catering, so the plate rate is set by the caterer you bring, not by Sumatra.
Price source: WedMeGood listing (price on request) + venue's own site, checked 2026-09-11. Published figures are reference points; ask the property for a written proposal for your date.

Sumatra policies
| Outside decorators | Contested — resolve in writing. The WedMeGood listing states decor is by 'decorators from our panel'; the venue's own site says it offers decor and design services alongside venue rental and 'access to trusted partners'. The js/data.js record currently says outside decorators are not permitted. Get the current written policy, any access fee, and whether it differs by space before committing to a design. |
|---|---|
| Catering | Outside catering. Both the venue's own site (which lists catering partners rather than an in-house kitchen) and the WedMeGood listing describe outside catering; Berhawa has built-in kitchens for the caterer to work from. |
| Alcohol | Contested — resolve in writing. The WedMeGood listing states outside alcohol is permitted with bartenders and service staff available; the js/data.js record currently says the venue is alcohol-free. Confirm for your date and function type before printing a bar menu. |
| Music and DJ | Outside DJ permitted per the WedMeGood listing. Every space is open-air or semi-covered, so plan the amplified-sound programme around the 10 pm outdoor cut-off that applies across Bengaluru. |
| Overnight stay | Yes — two villas and one standalone room, up to 18 guests. Not a hotel: the rest of the guest list stays off site. |
| Parking | Up to 150 cars on site, with valet service (venue's own FAQ). |
| Changing rooms | The two Roomah villas serve as the bride's and groom's suites. |

Designed, not just planned
Wedding planning & decor at Sumatra: how we would design it
Three things decide a design here. First, the water body on Asri: it is the venue's signature and the reason to set the mandap on that axis, but it also fixes the ceremony's orientation, which means the guest seating faces the water and therefore faces west in the afternoon. For an evening muhurtham, expect glare; for a morning one, it is the best light on the property. Build the mandap light and open; a heavy four-post structure blocks the very reflection you came for. Second, there is no ceiling anywhere. Every overhead element has to be self-supported or rigged off the pavilion frames: Hutan's bamboo frame and Berhawa's exposed steel trusses are the only real rigging points on the property. Berhawa's are the better of the two, since they are steel and take a genuine load, and both need that load confirmed in writing before anything is fabricated. On the lawns, suspended florals need a freestanding portal or scaffold, which is a cost line and a wind-load question, not an afterthought. Third, power and rain. An open property carrying lighting, sound and a caterer's kitchen at the same time rarely runs on house supply; ask what load is available, whether a silent generator is required and where it can be placed, because there is no plant room to hide it in. And size the weather plan honestly: Berhawa takes about 160, so a 400-guest evening on Asri needs a tented backup specified and priced at contract, with the decision time agreed. Palette-wise the property is already doing the work: grey stone, thatch, deep planting, still water. Restraint reads as luxury here; a heavy tented ceiling and a saturated palette fight the architecture and, on our reading, cost more to achieve less.
Which function goes where
| Haldi | Rumput, the hidden courtyard, at around 100 guests — enclosed by stone arches and planting, so the mess stays contained and the light is soft and even for photography until about 11 am. |
|---|---|
| Mehendi | Hutan, the open-frame cocktail pavilion with bamboo creepers overhead, for a 60-guest sit-down; Palem if the mehendi list runs past 150. Hutan's frame is the best rigging point on the property for suspended florals. |
| Sangeet | Palem, the palm grove lawn, up to 300 — with the performance stage set against the palms and the dance floor forward. Everything here is outdoors, so the amplified programme has to finish by 10 pm; put the performances at 7.30 and the dance floor at 9. |
| Wedding ceremony | Asri, the grand lawn, mandap set against the water body at the lawn's edge. Morning muhurthams are the strongest use of this space: the palms throw long shadows across the grass and the water carries the light. |
| Reception | Asri again, re-dressed, with the stage moved off the water axis to a long edge so the dinner service can run out of Berhawa without crossing the guest flow. |
Season and weather
October to March is the window: dry, 15–27°C, and every space here is open-air. April and May are usable for evening functions only. June to September is the hard case — Berhawa is the only covered space and it takes about 160, so a monsoon date means a tented structure for the main function, budgeted from the start. December and January muhurtham weekends go 9–12 months out; shoulder months and weekdays open up much later.
Arrivals, access and logistics
JP Nagar 9th Phase is a residential grid, not a highway frontage, so arrivals are easy but the approach road is narrow. Brief drivers on the exact address, and keep the baraat's dhol-and-band assembly on the property's own forecourt rather than the street. 150 cars park on site with valet; beyond that, plan shuttles from Jayanagar or JP Nagar hotels. Overnight inventory is three keys, so all but the immediate family stay off site: JP Nagar, Jayanagar and Bannerghatta Road hotels are 10–25 minutes away. The airport is the long leg, roughly 50 km and 90 minutes to two hours depending on the hour, so route overseas arrivals to a city hotel the night before rather than making the run on a function day. Vendor access, load-in windows and where a generator may stand are all worth fixing in writing: there is no service yard to absorb a late truck.
An honest read
Is Sumatra the right venue for your wedding?
| Right for you if | South Bengaluru families who want the Bali-resort feel without a two-hour drive; guest lists of roughly 150 to 450; couples who want their own caterer and a menu their family cooks to; multi-function weddings where each event deserves its own setting; photography-led couples, because the property has more distinct backdrops per acre than almost anything in the city. |
|---|---|
| Look elsewhere if | Guest lists above roughly 600 seated, where a lawn ceiling of 900 floating stops being comfortable. Families who need a large air-conditioned hall for a daytime muhurtham or a monsoon date — the covered space here seats about 160. Anyone who needs a large on-site room block: three keys is the whole inventory. |
| Planner tip | Get three lines in writing before the advance: the decorator policy and any access fee (the public listing and the js/data.js record disagree, and it decides who can build your design), the alcohol position for your specific function, and the weather structure for any outdoor function over about 160 guests — what it is, what it costs and how late the call can be made. Those three answers move the budget more than the rental figure does. |

Asked and answered
Sumatra wedding questions
How many guests can Sumatra hold for a wedding?
Sumatra's own site puts the ceiling at 900 guests on Asri, the grand lawn, with Palem taking 300, Berhawa about 160 seated, Rumput 100 and Hutan around 60. Its WedMeGood listing records a range of 850–1,000. Those are floating figures. A seated dinner with a stage, a dance floor and service aisles needs materially more room per head, so ask the venue to confirm the seated number for your exact layout, function by function.
Does Sumatra charge a rental or a per-plate minimum?
A rental. Sumatra is a standalone venue, not a hotel, so you take the property for the day at an agreed rate and contract catering separately on top. Its public listing shows 'Price on Request' with taxes extra — no published tariff — and the venue quotes per date, season and number of days. The advantage of this model is that the two biggest lines in your budget move independently, which makes the total easier to control.
Can we use our own caterer at Sumatra?
Yes. Both the venue's own site and its WedMeGood listing describe outside catering, and Berhawa, the thatched banquet pavilion, has built-in kitchens and restrooms for the caterer to work from. That is a real advantage for families who want an Iyer, Udupi, Jain or sattvic cook rather than a hotel kitchen's interpretation. Confirm kitchen access hours, any per-plate outside-catering charge and equipment provision in the contract.
Can we bring our own decorator to Sumatra?
This one needs to be settled in writing before you commission any design. Sumatra's WedMeGood listing states decor is by 'decorators from our panel', while the venue's own site offers decor and design services alongside venue rental. Our current js/data.js record says outside decorators are not permitted. Ask for the policy for your date, including any access or royalty fee and whether it varies by space, before a mandap is drawn.
Is alcohol allowed at Sumatra?
The public position is contradictory and worth confirming for your specific function. The WedMeGood listing says outside alcohol is permitted and that bartenders and service staff can be arranged; our existing venue record describes Sumatra as alcohol-free. Karnataka excise rules require a temporary permit for a licensed bar at a private event either way, so get the venue's current written answer before you print a bar menu.
What is the rain plan at Sumatra?
Berhawa, the semi-covered thatched pavilion, is the only built covered space, and the venue puts it at roughly 160 seated. Everything else — Asri, Palem, Rumput, Hutan — is open to the sky. So for any function larger than about 160, the backup is a temporary structure that has to be specified, priced and agreed at contract stage. Ask what it seats, who supplies it, what it costs and how late the weather call can be made.
How many rooms does Sumatra have?
Three: two Bali-styled villas and one standalone room, which the venue says sleep up to 18 guests with extra beds. They function as the bride's and groom's getting-ready suites during a wedding. Everyone else stays off site — JP Nagar, Jayanagar and Bannerghatta Road hotels are 10 to 25 minutes away. The villas can also be booked independently for short stays, directly or through Airbnb.
Is there parking at Sumatra?
Yes — the venue's own FAQ states up to 150 cars on site with valet service. For a 400-guest evening that covers most arrivals; above that, plan shuttles from a JP Nagar or Jayanagar pick-up point so the residential approach road stays clear. Worth agreeing in writing whether valet staff and parking marshals sit inside the day rate or are billed separately.
Where exactly is Sumatra and how far is the airport?
Sumatra is at 3, Raghavana Palya Main Road, JP Nagar 9th Phase, Bengaluru 560078 — South Bengaluru, off the Kanakapura Road side, and about ten minutes from Jayanagar. Kempegowda International Airport is the long leg at roughly 50 km, which is 90 minutes to two hours depending on the time of day. Route flying-in guests to a city hotel the night before rather than making the airport run on a function morning.
What time does the music have to stop at Sumatra?
Every space at Sumatra is open-air or semi-covered, so the 10 pm cut-off on outdoor amplified sound that applies across Bengaluru governs the evening, and there is no indoor room to move the party into afterwards. Plan the run-of-show around it: cocktails at 6.30, performances by 7.30, dance floor open by 9, dinner served alongside. Confirm the exact cut-off for your date with the venue in writing.
Which space suits which function at Sumatra?
Rumput, the enclosed courtyard, for haldi at about 100. Hutan, the bamboo-framed pavilion, for a 60-guest mehendi — and it is the only good rigging point for suspended florals. Palem, the palm lawn, for sangeet up to 300. Asri, the grand lawn, for the muhurtham with the mandap on the water axis, and again for the reception with the stage moved to a long edge. Berhawa carries the dining service throughout.
Can we hold the mandap and havan outdoors at Sumatra?
Yes — Asri is an open lawn and the venue's signature setting is a mandap beside the water body at its edge, so open-flame homam is straightforward and ventilation is not a constraint. Agree fire placement and any matting or ground protection with the venue in advance. An early-morning muhurtham works particularly well here because the light across the palms and the water is at its best before nine.
Is Sumatra good for a pre-wedding shoot?
It is one of the strongest shoot properties in South Bengaluru for its size — stone moon-gate arches, creeper-covered walkways, a palm grove, a thatched pavilion, two villas around a reflecting pool and a water-edged lawn, all within a short walk. The venue markets it for photo and film shoots as well as weddings. Ask for the shoot slot and any fee to be written into the wedding booking; couples holding a wedding there usually get the easiest yes.
Who should not book Sumatra?
Families with a seated list much above 600, because the property's scale and the single 160-seat covered space stop working. Anyone who needs a large air-conditioned hall for a daytime muhurtham or a monsoon-season date. And families who need a meaningful on-site room block — three keys is the entire inventory, so almost every guest sleeps elsewhere and you are running transport either way.
What does Panigrahana do at Sumatra?
Panigrahana is an architect-founded planning and decor studio; at Sumatra the work is design, production and the venue negotiation on your side of the table. Every mandap and set is drawn for the exact space and fabricated in-house by a 30-person team rather than pulled from a rental catalogue — which matters on a property with six differently sized outdoor rooms and no ceiling to rig from. Planning runs on a flat fee for the agreed scope, with no vendor commissions.
How far in advance should we book Sumatra?
For a peak muhurtham weekend between November and February, 9 to 12 months. Sumatra is a small property with one main lawn, so there is no second date on the same weekend the way there is at a multi-hall convention venue — when a date goes, it is gone. Off-peak and weekday dates can often be held with 3 to 6 months' notice. Fix the guest count and function list first, then hold the date in writing while the estimate is built.
