VAMA Retreats is one of the few Bangalore wedding venues where the backdrop is a landscape rather than a building. The lawn sits on a 180-acre campus at the foothills of Nandi Hills, close enough that the hills read as shape and shadow rather than as a smudge on the horizon. A mandap placed on the centre line of the lawn therefore has a ridge behind it in every wide frame, at no cost to anybody, and very little else within an hour of the city gives you that. The resort's own photographs make the point: a pale draped mandap on open turf, the hills sitting exactly where a set designer would have put them.
It is also a young property, opened in 2023, and that cuts both ways. The rooms, the pool deck and the cottages are new and unworn, and the lawn has none of the tired patches a twenty-year-old venue carries. The event infrastructure, though, is thinner than at a hotel: one air-conditioned indoor hall at 200 seated, one banquet lawn at 1,500 seated, and no covered space large enough to absorb the lawn if the weather turns. For a 400-guest wedding in the dry window that is not a problem. For an 800-guest wedding in June it is the whole problem, and it has to be solved with a built structure over the lawn rather than by moving the party indoors.
Where VAMA earns its place on a shortlist is the residential weekend. Sixty-five rooms, a pool, a restaurant, bonfire and barbecue evenings, cycling and trekking on site, and a drive of roughly half an hour from Kempegowda International Airport mean a fly-in guest list can land, check in and stay put for three days. That is the same argument Amita Rasa and the Nandi Hills estates make, and VAMA makes it at a materially lower published plate. The trade is that VAMA's listing shows in-house decor and in-house catering, so the two lines a design-led couple most wants to control are the two you have to negotiate hardest before you sign.

Every function needs its own room
Function spaces at VAMA Retreats
| Space | Type | Seated | Floating | Air-conditioned | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Banquet Lawn | lawn | 1,500 | 2,000 | No | The main wedding space and the only one that takes a full guest list. Open turf with the Nandi Hills ridge on the horizon; the resort's own photographs show mandaps built centre-lawn with the hills framed behind, and a fabric-and-truss ceiling flown over the aisle when the sun is high. Capacities from the WedMeGood listing, checked 2026-09-11. |
| Indoor Hall | hall | 200 | 300 | Yes | The only enclosed, air-conditioned event room on the property. At 200 seated it cannot absorb a lawn wedding of 800, so it works as a mehendi/haldi room or a small-function room rather than as a rain plan for the lawn. Capacities from the WedMeGood listing, checked 2026-09-11. |
| Open-sided pavilion | hall | — | — | No | A large columned, roofed, open-sided pavilion on a tiled deck, visible in the resort's own wedding photographs dressed for a haldi with the Nandi ridge on three sides. VAMA publishes no capacity or dimension for it — confirm with the resort before planning a function into it. |
| Poolside | poolside | — | — | No | Year-round outdoor pool with a wide timber-finish deck and shade umbrellas, shown on the resort's own site. No published event capacity; used in practice for small evening functions. |
A dash means the figure is not published. Ask for a measured plan of each space with the mandap, stage, dining and service access marked before you fix a guest count.
What it actually costs
VAMA Retreats wedding cost evidence
| Vegetarian plate | ₹2,300 per plate — ₹2,300 per plate veg, taxes extra, is the published starting figure on the WedMeGood listing. No non-veg plate is published. Catering is in-house only, so this line is also your venue line. |

Designed, not just planned
Wedding planning & decor at VAMA Retreats: how we would design it
Sightlines to the ridge come first. The hills are the asset, so the mandap and the stage both want to sit on the lawn's long centre line with the ridge behind them, and every structure, trussing, LED and cold-fire towers included, has to be kept out of that cone. The resort's own photograph of an orange draped-ceiling build shows the failure mode: vertical trussing on both flanks of the aisle cuts the hills into slices. Fly the ceiling from a perimeter frame instead and keep the head of the aisle clear. Sun and rain are the next problem, because the lawn is unshaded. There is no tree canopy and no indoor room big enough to be a fallback, so a daytime function needs a translucent fabric ceiling over the guest block from the start rather than as a wet-weather afterthought, and a monsoon-window date needs a structural marquee costed in on day one. Then power and load-in. This is a young 180-acre campus, not a hotel with a bay and a service lift, so confirm the generator capacity, the distance from the nearest three-phase point to the lawn, whether vehicles can reach the lawn edge, and the ground-protection rules before you draw anything heavy. The tiled pavilion deck is the one hard standing on the property and is worth reserving for whatever needs a level floor. And work with the hill light rather than against it: a warm 2700K wash on the mandap with a cooler uplight on the perimeter planting keeps the ridge readable at dusk instead of blowing it out.
Which function goes where
| Haldi | The open-sided pavilion, mid-morning. It is roofed, so the yellow does not cook the guests, and open on three sides to the ridge, so the hills stay in frame. VAMA's own photographs show exactly this: low seating and bolsters on the tiled deck, canopy fabric strung under the roof structure, hills beyond the columns. |
|---|---|
| Mehendi | The indoor hall if the party is under 200 and you want air conditioning and controlled light for the artists. The poolside deck if it is smaller and you want the late-afternoon light. The hall is the only space on the property where you can hold a temperature, which counts for a four-hour mehendi in April. |
| Sangeet | The lawn, with the stage on the built edge so the technical crew has hard standing and a power run, and the audience facing away from the service road. Amplified outdoor sound in Karnataka generally stops at 10 pm, so plan a sangeet here to peak between 7:30 and 9:45 and move to the pavilion or the bonfire for the tail. |
| Wedding ceremony | The lawn, mandap on the centre line with the Nandi ridge behind it. This is the reason to book VAMA, and every other decision should be subordinate to it. An early-morning muhurtham works well, because the whole family is already resident and the light on the hills at 6:30–8:00 am is the best the property gets. |
| Reception | The lawn again, re-dressed. No indoor room here is large enough to take a reception off the lawn, so a two-function day means either two builds on the same turf overnight, or one build lit differently for the evening. Price the overnight turnaround before you plan it. |
Season and weather
October to February is the window. Nandi Hills-side evenings in that period run cool enough for an outdoor dinner without heaters, the turf is dry, and the ridge is clear rather than hazed. March to May is workable for evening functions but needs a fabric ceiling over any daytime guest block. June to September is monsoon, and the honest answer is that an unshaded lawn with a 200-seat indoor fallback is the wrong geometry for it. If the date is fixed, budget a structural marquee. Auspicious November–January weekends go first here, as everywhere.
Arrivals, access and logistics
Guests drive out on Doddaballapura Road via Yelahanka, or off the airport road. The resort puts the airport at about 30 minutes and the city centre at about an hour, while the WedMeGood listing measures 32.2 km to Kempegowda International Airport, 16.3 km to Dodballapur railway station and 5.9 km to the nearest bus stop. For a Bangalore-based guest list the drive is the real cost, so plan on 75–110 minutes from the southern and eastern suburbs in evening traffic and put on coaches rather than letting 200 cars find their own way. Sixty-five rooms cover the family and the closest guests; beyond that, overflow goes to the airport-side hotels and needs a shuttle schedule. Vendor access is the other question to settle early: confirm the earliest load-in time, whether trucks can reach the lawn edge, and the generator capacity available for a decor and lighting build.
An honest read
Is VAMA Retreats the right venue for your wedding?
| Right for you if | Couples of 300–800 guests who want a genuine landscape backdrop and a residential weekend within about half an hour of the airport, at a plate materially below the Nandi Hills luxury estates. It suits fly-in guest lists, pet-owning families, since the resort is explicitly pet-friendly, and programmes where the wedding is one part of a three-day stay with activities. |
|---|---|
| Look elsewhere if | Couples who must bring their own decorator or their own caterer: the listing shows both as in-house, and that has to be settled before anything else. Also not the venue for a 1,500-guest monsoon-season wedding that needs an indoor fallback, or for a family that wants five-star hotel service standards. This is a 2023 resort, not a Taj. |
| Planner tip | Settle the decor clause first, in writing, before you talk about dates. VAMA's public listing says in-house decor, and every other decision you make, budget, design and vendor list, hangs off whether an outside design studio can build here and on what terms. The second call is the rain structure. Because there is no indoor space that can take the lawn's guest list, a marquee is a design element and a line item from the first draft rather than an insurance policy you buy in September. |

Venues couples weigh against VAMA Retreats
Asked and answered
VAMA Retreats wedding questions
What does a wedding at VAMA Retreats cost per plate?
VAMA Retreats publishes ₹2,300 per plate vegetarian, taxes extra, on its WedMeGood listing (checked 11 September 2026). No non-vegetarian plate is published. Catering is in-house only, so that plate is effectively your venue-and-food line together. At the listed floor, a 500-guest two-function wedding is about ₹23 lakh in catering alone before taxes, decor, rooms and bar. Ask the resort for the current rate card for your exact date; a listing figure is a floor, not a quote.
How many guests can VAMA Retreats hold?
The banquet lawn takes 1,500 seated or 2,000 floating and the indoor hall takes 200 seated or 300 floating, per the WedMeGood listing checked 11 September 2026. The listing describes the property overall as suitable for 200 to 2,000 guests. Seated figures assume clear rows; a mandap, a stage, a dance floor and service aisles all take turf out of that number, so ask for a layout drawn to your actual function before you fix a guest list.
Is there an indoor backup if it rains at VAMA Retreats?
Not one that can take a wedding-sized guest list. The only enclosed, air-conditioned room on the property seats 200, against a lawn that seats 1,500. For any function above 200 guests the rain plan is a built structure over the lawn, not a move indoors. If your date falls between June and September, treat a marquee as a line item in the first budget rather than as insurance bought late. Confirm with the resort what covered structure, if any, it provides.
Can we bring our own decorator to VAMA Retreats?
The WedMeGood listing for VAMA Retreats records in-house decor, which is different from the Leela and Taj properties in Bangalore that permit outside decorators. Nothing on the resort's own site contradicts or confirms it. If you have already chosen a design studio, make this the first question you put to the resort and get the answer in writing, including whether an outside team can build against an access or royalty fee. Everything else in your budget depends on the answer.
How far is VAMA Retreats from Bangalore airport?
VAMA's own website puts the resort about a 30-minute drive from Kempegowda International Airport and roughly an hour from the city centre. The WedMeGood listing measures 32.2 km to the airport, 16.3 km to Dodballapur railway station and 5.9 km to the nearest bus stop. For guests driving out from south or east Bangalore, plan on 75 to 110 minutes in evening traffic and run coaches rather than letting two hundred cars find their own way.
How many rooms does VAMA Retreats have?
Sixty-five rooms, per both the WedMeGood listing and VAMA's own description of the property, published at ₹5,000 per room on the listing (checked 11 September 2026). That covers the immediate family and the closest guests for a residential weekend. A 500-guest wedding will need overflow accommodation on the airport side with a shuttle schedule, so decide early who actually sleeps on site — that decision shapes your whole transport plan.
How big is the VAMA Retreats property?
VAMA Retreats describes itself as a 180-acre green campus at the foothills of Nandi Hills. In practice a wedding uses a small, defined part of it: the banquet lawn, the indoor hall, the pavilion, the pool deck and the cottage clusters. The rest is the setting and the activity land — cycling trails, the adventure and obstacle course, trekking routes. That matters for a three-day programme, because guests who are not in a function have somewhere to be.
When did VAMA Retreats open?
The WedMeGood listing records the venue as started in 2023 and on the platform for about a year and four months as of September 2026. That is worth knowing in both directions: the rooms, the pool deck and the lawn are new and unworn, but the property has a shorter wedding track record than the established Nandi Hills estates, and there are no published reviews on its WedMeGood listing to read.
Can we have a DJ and how late can music run at VAMA Retreats?
The WedMeGood listing records an in-house DJ available and outside DJs permitted. It publishes no sound cut-off. Karnataka's general rule closes amplified outdoor sound at 10 pm, and an open lawn on a rural campus is still bound by it unless the resort holds a specific permission. Ask the resort to confirm the cut-off for your date in writing, and plan a lawn sangeet to peak between 7:30 and 9:45 pm with the tail moved under cover.
Is alcohol allowed at VAMA Retreats?
The WedMeGood listing records an in-house bar available with outside alcohol not permitted. That means the bar is priced and licensed through the resort, separately from the ₹2,300 plate, either per bottle or as a package. Ask for the bar list and the package structure with the food rate card, because for an evening reception the bar is frequently the second-largest catering line after the plate itself.
Is VAMA Retreats pet-friendly?
Yes, and unusually so. VAMA's own site describes pet mattresses, pet buffet meals, leash-free pet enclosures and a dedicated pet pool, and lists a pet-friendly resort as one of its four main offerings alongside family retreats, corporate offsites and school trips. For a couple whose dog is in the wedding party — an increasingly common brief — that is a genuine differentiator against every five-star hotel in Bangalore.
What is the best time of year for a wedding at VAMA Retreats?
October to February. Evenings on the Nandi Hills side are cool enough in that window for an outdoor dinner without heaters, the turf is dry, and the ridge behind the lawn reads clearly instead of hazing out. March to May works for evening functions but wants a fabric ceiling over any daytime guest block. June to September is monsoon, and with a 200-seat indoor fallback against a 1,500-seat lawn, a monsoon date here needs a structural marquee costed in from the start.
What does the mandap look best against at VAMA Retreats?
The Nandi Hills ridge, and nothing else. The lawn's long centre line puts the hills directly behind a mandap, which is why the resort's own ceremony photograph works. The design discipline that follows is to keep trussing, LED walls and cold-fire towers out of that cone and to fly any ceiling from a perimeter frame instead of from posts flanking the aisle. Get that one decision right and the venue does most of the work for you.
Is VAMA Retreats a good choice for guests flying in from abroad?
It is one of the better ones near Bangalore, on distance alone: about 30 minutes from Kempegowda International Airport by the resort's own estimate, so a guest landing at 4 am is in a bed within the hour rather than crossing the city. Sixty-five rooms hold the core party. Beyond that you are running a shuttle from airport-side hotels, which is manageable but needs a written schedule keyed to actual flight arrivals rather than to hope.
How does VAMA Retreats compare with Amita Rasa and the Nandi Hills estates?
VAMA is the volume option on that side of the city: a 1,500-seat lawn and 65 rooms at a published ₹2,300 plate, against Amita Rasa's stone mandap and Kalyani set on an estate with seven rooms across two villas at a booked ₹16 lakh per day. Amita Rasa is a designed landscape for 150–300 guests; VAMA is open turf with a hill view for 400–1,000. Mulberry Shades and the Taj at the airport sit between them on both count and price.
