About Windermere Estate, Munnar

Windermere Estate is a working cardamom plantation at Pothamedu, on the road from Munnar to Bison Valley, with 18 guest rooms built around the original planter's bungalow. It has been open to guests since 1997. It does not advertise weddings or publish an event space, so a wedding here means booking the whole estate for 30 to 40 people. The history is Travancore, not colonial. Syrian Christian planters from central Travancore set up the plantation in the early 1930s; Dr Simon John, an eye surgeon from Kochi, bought it in 1987 and opened it to guests ten years later. The bungalow is still the owner's residence. Older write-ups, our own earlier page among them, called it an 1890s British tea estate; the estate's own account does not support that.

What you get is scale and quiet: a pool, a library, a gazebo, a boulder where dinners end at a bonfire, and a kitchen that serves course by course with no buffet.
