A mandap in the round is a completely different design problem from a mandap on a stage. There is no back: every one of the four elevations is a front, so the structure has to read from all sides and the usual trick of hiding the ugly side towards the wall is unavailable. That also means the mandap should be lower and more open than a proscenium-style build, because guests are looking across it at each other. The pavilion roof is a Mangalore-tiled plane on timber posts, warm-toned and beautiful from underneath — do not tent under it, and do not hang a ceiling that hides it. Light up into the underside of the tiles and the posts, and the roof becomes the canopy. The reflecting channels and planted beds around the buildings give free foreground for photographs; set the aisle so it crosses one of them. The no-DJ rule has a design consequence too: with live music, the sound source is visible, so the musicians' position is part of the composition rather than a black stack in a corner.
